Payton's locker room presence (1 Viewer)

If there is anything to blame Sean Payton for, is his inability to recognize the value of Pierre Thomas. In week 7 we played the Panthers, and PT had 1 carries for 2yds. Now that was negligence on Payton's part! he should have played PT a lot more in that game, based on what we suspected then, and know now!

PT is a play maker, and under utilizing him was Payton's problem! He shoul've known by then what he had in PT.

Haslett's teams never consistantly beat the teams they were supposed to beat. Payton's teams seem to always win the games they're supposed to. Honestly, looking back on the season we were only out of contention in one game this year. That was the first meeting against Carolina. All the other games we either lost the lead in the 4th quarter or had a chance at the end to either tie or win the game. Next year will be different. Hopefully we win the the close games and win the the games we're supposed to.

I agree, except that we were out of contention against Atlanta the first go round as well.

We aren't the only ones who noticed. From the TP:

--Great hustle by Marvin Mitchell to recover a fumble by Lance Moore on a punt return in the second half. Despite the big lead, the Saints hustled throughout the game, which is a credit to the leadership on the sideline and in the locker room.

Listen, Detroit has been in just about every game they've played this season, often carrying leads into the fourth quarter. The whole college team thing is used upon looking at the record, and without any knowledge in how they got to 0-15. If they had a quarterback they probably would have won 6 games at the very least.

I would like to see the Saints get just credit for absolutely blowing out a team who had alot to play for (avoiding a dubious place in history) and who has taken some very good teams right down to the wire this season.

fwiw. Detroit has played much better on the road then at home. I think the pressure is probably getting to them in front of their fans.

dd - forget 2000 ? ok, 2 in 18 ...

meh....we won on wild card weekend because Brian Milne was in the right place at the right time and Az Zahir Hakeem decided to drop the biggest punt of the game. You just know that if Warner gets his hands on that ball it's ballgame for the Rams. Don't get me wrong here, that game was awesome and I still get hazy when thinking of how it felt that night to finally win a playoff game!

The Vikes blew us out the next week despite Ricky and Joe returning to the lineup. We just didn't have an answer for Randy Moss.

I don't consider us a contender that year although we were very competitive.....nobody had the book on Brooks yet and we benefitted greatly. Of course, that's JMHO.....I am drawing a sharp line between contender and competitive though.....it's all subjective!

Most definitely......I mean I have never been a pro football player, but I can only imagine the pressure to win under those conditions....not only for the players, but the coaches too. I hope they beat the Pack next week, but in the kind of weather they are going to be playing in as a dome team.....I just don't see it. The packers are another team who could have been really good if not for a couple of bounces this way or that.

The NFC was really competitive this year.

I don't agree with diat about us saying the same things about Haslett's teams. Many of us felt that Haslett's teams were undisciplined on the field and sometimes in the locker room as well. Many games were mailed in under Haslett.... I don't see our team under Payton not winning one of those last games in December 2002 to make the playoffs.

Haslett's teams were undisciplined because the coach himself was undisciplined. He had that affair with a cheerleader that cost him money and also cost him the team's respect. He was also playing a quarterback that wasn't as good as the guy behind him. Football players not only don't respect that, they despise it because it's costing them a chance to be the best team they can be. That's why Haslett's teams tanked on him at the first sign of adversity. They didn't want to play for the guy.

Furthermore, he didn't have a leader at the qb position like Drew Brees. Do NOT underestimate the motivation that Brees gives this team. Brees has been a winner at every level. I think he is the one who motivates this team to play even when they have nothing to play for.

To respond to your last statement, I have a question. Why don't you see our team under Payton losing those last few games in December 2002? This opinion is based on what? Payton's teams didn't win enough to make the playoffs this year when most pundits think they should have. Payton's teams didn't win enough last year to make the playoffs when most pundits thought they should have. Payton has had two consecutive years of underachieving.

His teams are underachieving in a different way than Haslett's Saints did. Haslett's Saints, after the playoff victory year, would come out strong and finish weak. Payton's teams, after the playoff victory year, have come out weak and finished strong. So, no, maybe Payton's teams wouldn't lose all four games in December, but when you lose three games in September, it doesn't really matter what you do in December, as we've discovered the last two years.

Now, if you can determine WHY Payton can't win in September, you can probably solve the team's problems. For myself ... I already know why. For those who still can't understand why Payton has been out of the playoffs for the last two seasons, look at the common events in the first of the year, this year and last year, and the common events at the end of the year, this year and last year. You'll have your answer.

dont forget that our division was absolutely horrible, and the only team we beat with a winning record was the rams, who were a shell of their former self.

I hadn't thought about it much so far, but he must be doing something right. After the bears game those boys had taken a loss that can leave any team deflated. Yet the Saints came out the next week and executed near perfectly. Sure they played a college team, but we all know the Saints win or lose the game themselves.

i could have gave the postgame speech and they would have beat the lions.....

Fair enough. Any way you choose to cut it, I agree with your principle point that the past 2 decades have been sorely lacking for the most part.

Wow, exagerate much ?

Our division absolutely horrible ? Our division was relatively comparable to the other 2 NFC divisions that season, certainly not enough difference to call it horrible:

And the Rams were hardly a "shell of their former self" -- they were by far the highest scoring team in the league that year, though I'll give you that their defense was down a bit from 1999.

yeah absolutely horrible. the bottom 3 teams were laughing stocks. as far as the rams, downa bit? down a bit? they went from 4th in points against to last. 4th to last.

I absolutely agree. The thing that made me so nervous about that game is how close the Lions were in several games especially the last 4 or 5. They really held leads in about 3 or 4 games recently in the 4th quarter.
