PFT: Dungy out as Colts coach (1 Viewer)

Yeah I wasn't disagreeing with the rule, I actually like the rule. Just commenting on the irony involved in nailing the Colts for violating the Rooney Rule right after Dungy retires.

I can see why the rule is needed, but I can also see how it still polarizes the races. I guess I'm an idealist and I like to think that the best coach should and will get the job, of course this is the real world and that isn't always the case.

Agreed.

Jeez that's twice today I've agree with you. Something must be in the water here LMAO.:hihi:

The interviews aren't about getting that specific job.

Being able to interview for a better job improves your own stock amongst your peers and gives you leverage against your current employeer. It also allows you to impress powerful people who otherwise would have no other exposure to you.

If i'm black and Jerry Jones wants to interview me, I don't care if he's basically hired Garrett, I go and interview. If I impress Jerry enough, even if he doesn't hire me, I
1) I get the prestige of having attracted the interest of an owner like Jerry Jones
2) I establish myself as a "wanted" person, which may improve my position with my current team
3) And I establish a positive word-of-mouth reputation as Jerry Jones relays my good impression to other owners

This is really true of most any workplace, but it's especially true in the NFL because the NFL is an ultra-exclusive club where word-of-mouth recommendations carry an inordinate amount of weight.

"It's who you know" so why not have the opportunity to get to know and impress more people?

Understood - but if all of those things occur solely because of my race, have I earned it and is it genuine, or is it some kind of "token" status? I just don't think that skin color - black, white, brown, yellow, or purple, should even factor into the equation at all. But maybe, like B&G, I'm too much of an idealist. :9:

NFL rules, you have to interview a minority candidate before selecting a coach and if Dungy were just handing over the reins to a white guy it would technically be a violation, dumb as that may be.

If you have to interview a minority, why don't you have to interview a majority?

I was wondering the same thing, does it work the other way?

The whole idea was not to just "select" your guy without interviewing multiple applicants of various races...

Using any other owner (except Bidwell) would have served your scenario much better. :mwink: Yeah, I get that JJ is the high profile owner of America's team, but I still don't find him to be the great football mind that he fancies himself to be.

Why Dont They Have To Interview A White Man ,chinese Man, And Mexican Man Before They Hire The Black Coach. I Think The Rooney Rule Is Terrible. You Shoul Be Able To Hire Anyone You Want To Run Your Company.

i thought promoting from within is the exception to the rule. - if were an owner id talk to everyone i could - though i understand the rush -

Actually I think the rule is you have to interview a minority, not necessarily an African-american. So if you interviewed a Hispanic candidate, you would be in compliance with the Rooney Rule.

Dungy denied the report he is stepping down: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3199685
Reading through some of the comments... I came across something interesting:

Don't leave Tony, and please draft Jacob Hester. He would be a great compliment to our running game/shotgun pass protection. We need to be a little deeper at O-Line, and that takes care of the offense (unless Marvin retires). Just take the best athletes you can on D. Doesn't matter what position.

Can get away from the LSU homers anywhere :hihi:

I think they should have to interview females too.. They are being discriminated against in the NFL circles!!!
