News QB Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to start in Derek Carr’s absence, sources tell Garafolo and Rapoport (3 Viewers)

Why am I so giddy with excitement over there terrible news?

I really want us to start Spencer... He's tough, has swagger, has elite talent, and can play this game on or off script... but this decision could also decide DAs future with this team... so I'm torn really.

I was thinking the same thing. Rattler is no stranger to having a bad Oline. Plus, the offense has similarities to the one he ran. He has confidence and he’s ready for moments like this. I didn’t like the look in Jake’s eyes last night.
It's damn near the same offense, including the 2 man route concepts that we call a lot of. My only worry is, Rattler absolutely needs a go to receiver. He'll chunk it up for grabs and he worked best with a bigger longer WR. Juice Wells was supposed to be the #1A but he got hurt and he ended up relying on the WR the Panthers took, turned him into a 1st rounder.

I like DA more than most, I also think like most coaches, you can't win if you don't have good QB play. Seans great, but if he doesn't land Drew he looks like he did w/ Wilson. If Bill doesn't land Brady he looks like he did w/ Cam Newton and his young draft pick.

If Rattler is DA's guy his career trajectory as a HC could change 100%

The Saints aren't facing Spags and McDuffie again on the regular season schedule. No one left on the schedule who can put the clamps on Olave, and Olave has shined in true one on one matchups. Time to sling it to the most reliable receiver on the team who is catching 78% of the passes thrown his way.

Do you get the impression that DA has "guys"? I really don't get any vibes from him that way.

Haener and Rattler are two different types of QB’s.

Haener is more Carr than Rattler, so having him as the primary backup to Carr makes sense because you can keep same gameplan.

I hoper they start Rattler, he will be able to evade pressure easier, although I expect he will make mistakes.

With this O-line, you need a QB that roll outside of the pocket. Easy choice, but I think we all know who DA is gonna start.

Granted possible.... I tend to think you need both - Great QB and Coach... but one can make the other and vice versa.

I would be fascinated to find out what Kubiak thinks. I am hopeful that DA would defer to who he wants to play the position right now.

As much as the fanbase wants Rattler to start because of his perceived upside over Haener, I also want Rattler to be put in a situation where he can find success.

I will say, Haener did a very good job of being mobile as soon as protection imploded at the snap last night.

I think Rattler has much higher potential than Haener, but I wouldn't be surprised if Haener gets the nod and is able to make some plays with his legs.

I would bet money that Haener starts this week, looks erratic and Rattler starts the next week.

Rattler might not be any better, but at least he has the promise to be better.
