News QB Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to start in Derek Carr’s absence, sources tell Garafolo and Rapoport (2 Viewers)

Not every player is drafted with the expectation to be a starter. A cost controlled backup QB That you can have for multiple years is a pretty valuable commodity. If he happens to be more than that, you've hit the lottery.
That and IMHO until you find a definite answer you should draft a QB every year.

DA is on a 3 game losing streak but will have evasive answers with the press like it's some big top secret mission on who will be the starter :ROFLMAO:. Just name Spencer Rattler and move forward
But he shouldn't.. for whatever advantage as small as it may be Tampa doesn't need to know who is starting.

Technically they did because Haener is #2 and rattler has been scout team. all that other nonsense is just coach speak.
Not really. Stylistically Haener makes a better gameday backup for Carr than Rattler. That doesn't mean he's next up to start.

I get it, im just saying the whole co #2 idea is just silly if one is running scout team and the other is prepping for games. It's coach speak for ego protection.

I agree. Didn’t we have Winston as backup all year and he finished the game where drew was injured but then Hill got the starts moving forward until Drew returned. Then once Drew was starting again, Winston was back-up again. I can see a similar situation here. It’s not unheard of.

I think Underhill/Tripplet said they are mixing that up in practice. Who runs scout team depends on the QB they are playing and they are trying to keep the reps even.

I agree. If one is the backup on gameday and one is the emergency 3rd QB who - by rule - cannot play unless the other two QBs get hurt, you know who is the #2 QB.

It's not like they activated Rattler for half the games and Haener for half the games. Haener has been the backup so far.

Now they might make a change this week based on practice or crappy o-line or gameplan or whatever - but I kinda feel like we already know the answer. The "Rattler might start!" report seems like a leak from Rattler camp to push the issue. Just IMO. (I hope it works!)

FWIW this is what Nick Underhill says (in an article pushing for Rattler to get the start):

Going with Rattler would be a little odd, considering Haener is the backup and Rattler’s been inactive on game days. But it might just happen that the team likes Haener better in the emergency role and would prefer to game plan for Rattler. Same thing happened to Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill a few years ago after Drew Brees got hurt. So this wouldn't be without precedent.

Everyone says Rattler’s been performing well in practices and has leveled up since training camp. They rave about his big arm and play-making ability, which are things we all saw throughout camp. But no one could really say how his reps on the scout team would translate into running the Saints offense. So if it happens to be Rattler, everyone is going to find out how it looks on the field against real competition at the same time as us.
