The conversations on SR lean towards Gay as a backup. Is he really not strong enough to be solid starter?

I doubt anybody here knows the answer, he has been a nickel back at NE.

However, Mike M is not going to be ready on opening day, so Gay needs to tighten his shoelaces and be ready to go.

Considering how poorly we played at the CB position last year, EVERYONE will have an opportunity to become a starter.

1. MM had a season ending injury and his status for the first regular season game is still up in the air.

2. Jason David just didn't get it done.

3. U. Young was a rookie and is slowly coming into his own

4. Craft is another year older and his days of being a #1 or #2 CB are long gone

With all that being said, Gay has a solid shot at being the #2 and potentially filling in for MM if he can't be 100% on day one of the season.

Now, we still have the draft, training camp and the possibility of picking up another veteran via trade or late TC cuts.

What I'd like to see......

1. MM come back healthy...there's your #1 CB
2. L. Sheppard is traded for and able to clearly take over the #2 CB spot
3. R. Gay able to play the nickel for the first part of the season and slowly get moved into the Safety spot as the season progresses...explanation below
4. U. Young is used as a backup for Gay and Sheppard for the first few games to get some more playing time and work his way into the nickel spot, so Gay can be the backup to Sheppard and Safety position
5. J. David is relegated to the dime position
6. Craft is given a very classy farewell for his time served and contribution to the team
7. A rookie CB is taken in the draft and given a chance to learn slowly for this year and work his way into the lineup....the same way Young did ;)

Now, what I"m afraid will happen:

1. MM isn't ready for the start of the season and put on the PUP list
2. We draft a young CB in the first or second round and he is thrown to the wolves on day one: (DRC or Porter)
3. J. David is kept in the #1 or #2 spot for the season or until MM comes back
4. R. Gay is kept in the nickel and takes cleanup duty in the Safety position from time to time
5. Young is put in the dime spot
6. Craft is kept on the team and backs up when needed....if Craft is still on the team after final cuts, we are in SAD shape. Not becuase he is horrible, but because we didn't get enough of an infusion of young talent to warrant his release. He can always be brought back later in the year if need be, but we need youth in his roster spot.

Gay will start number 2 until MM gets healthy and then he will be nickleback, unless young has a VERY strong camp... Gays experience will help him fill in until MM is 100%

just remember who he was behind in NE.. and he did start in a SuperBowl win,, that being said.. so did J. David..
So i believe our problem at DB is much bigger than J. David.. it's not having someone of the level of bob sanders at safety..

If the season started today hopefully he would get the nod over David. Otherwise, why did we get him?

to compete for the nickleback spot, he has starting experience and performed solidly as a starter, competition is always good, and young will be better because he is here, or get passes on the depth chart.

Since there is "some" uncertainty with MM, then Gay would probably be the starter right now...

But when MM comes back, that should put him at Nickel. Though, I remember in a interview with Rick Muller and the "Sportswrap" crew, he said they only view Randall as a Nickel and that's it.

I'll end all of the controversy and tell yall who will win the starting job at cornerback. whoever EARNS it!!!!!!!!!!!!

MM has a very good shot at being ready for opening day. He had a partial tear no? I thought I read somewhere he'll be ready. I think David would be a great NB.

Young needs to step up really big this year. really big. This would be a huge win for us. Leaves many options, like trying Gay's hand a Safety (hopefully he doesn't bite on every fake and play action like our current FS).

Jason David didn't do anything last year that showed he's better than Randall Gay...
