Retirement: When do you plan to retire? (3 Viewers)

Kids will be through college when I’m 61. I suppose I could probably retire then, but haven’t done the math. If the last goes to grad school I’d push it back a few years. I contribute 8% on my 403-B and there’s a match of part of that. I’ve budgeted in 12% in a few years. My company has a pension, which plays into that decision making.

A big part is healthcare…and it’s one of the biggest factors that determine retirement. We’ll see what we have then. If we still have Medicare and the age keeps getting pushed back…it may be 70 in 20+ years. You’d have to privately and personally insure to make the difference. I’m a vet so I may use the VA to bridge, but who knows what the VA looks like then.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately (I have a birthday approaching) and started thinking about it during my health battles (I am winning!). Those battles were costly to my bottom line and the economy is off-kilter on a number of fronts. I find myself thinking that I might not be able to retire until 75 if at all (sans any lottery winning).

When do you plan to retire?
I have a 19 year-old son in college, and a 9 year old daughter. My finances got wrecked when I was unemployed for a good stretch of 2018-2019. What is this retirement of which you speak??

I'm on the Miracle Retirement Plan. it'll be a ******* miracle if I ever retire. Of course, I'm open to miracles of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

So sorry to hear this, hope all goes well mate....

I bought years in my pension plan with deferred comp money for my Christmas present to myself. Didn't realize until I was playing with retirement scenarios in the system that I could have retired in Jan 2022. Not gonna happen, but it sure feels nice.

In all likelihood I'll stay until regular retirement as at that time I can defer retirement into an investment acct. I'd keep working for my regular salary and up to 3 years retirement pay in an investment acct lump sum collectable when I decide to hang it up. I just don't know if I can walk away from 2.5 years salary as long as I'm enjoying my work like I am.

So between now & 2027 depending...

I'd like to think we can retire at some point and it's a dream we're working on and talk about often... then you get days like yesterday where life kicks you in the teeth and makes you question what's the real ambition here... Got one of those phone calls you never want, a very close relative of my wife... they were same age and grew up together since birth, literally 100ft away. For all practical purposes, he was a brother to her.

It's great to save and prepare for retirement, but don't forget to take the time to enjoy and appreciate what we have today....

This year , December 15th 2023 !! Can't wait , Feb. 4th was 43 years I'm working here , that's long enough . Why that day ? My Wife and I will both be 65 . For years I've put 15% of my pay in my 401K and it looks really good . Planning on a road trip to north California , Redwood Forest #1 on my bucket list . I got lucky when our company was bought out by a global company in 97' , shares went through the roof . https://avenueofthegiants.net/
