I was watching locked on saints Last night on YouTube, and in the last section he talks about the o-line with the gaps, and the drops of the tackles. It got me to thinking about Trevor Penning and his development.

It has taken Cesar Ruiz 3 years to develop in the pass blocking part of his game. His run blocking has been there though. Trevor is in the same boat.

Trevor has to learn how to block 2 different gaps - the B gap, and the C gap. Then, he has to learn where to be in his drops - whether it be a 3 step, 5 step, or 7 step drop. Then, there's shot gun and all it's drops.

Run blocking is pretty straight forward, but pass blocking is not. It takes time to learn and develop as an O-lineman in the NFL. Trevor had something like a 80 score in run blocking last year, but something like a 30 something for pass blocking.

Hopefully, he has been working on this during the off-season, but he has also been rehabbing the injury. How much work could he actually put in while rehabbing.

We all pretty much think it's his job to lose, and I hope we are right and it all comes together for him. I just thank God we have a James Hurst on the team. He's not great but he is serviceable and maybe even above average.

Trevor will get there. I think he is that talented. Maybe even during TC. We just need to give him time, and not get ahead of the process.

It's Andrus Peat I'm more worried about. He has never developed into what we need him to be. He's oft injured, and he misses too many blocks. Personally, I'd love for Saldiveri to be able to be developed enough to beat out Peat. It'd be nice to have Peat as a backup over being the starter.

Calvin Throckmorton is another one of our O-lineman that I'm excited about. He seems to get better every year. He's a very good backup for the saints.

Now though, I have to wonder. Landon Young. Is he developing as the backup tackle we drafted him to be. I don't know how much playing time he's gotten. But if Ram has to come out, can Young actually hold up. He was a 7th round pick after all.

I'm excited this year for this unit. I really want to see the entire starting O-line play together for an entire season, something we never got to see last year. This unit still concerns me as to whether some of the young guys can actually develop, but the more I hear from guys like Ross Jackson and the guys @ no.football, the less I seem to be worried.

Trevor has a lot to learn, but Doug Marone is one of the best o-line coaches in the league for developing young players. I'm excited to see this all take shape in TC.

Who DAT

Penning has already lost a year of development. If he gets hurt again this year and misses significant time, then he’s really gonna be behind.

Injuries, injuries injuries 🤬🤬🤬

I think it was the folk on NOF who said Rams got some kinda knee problems that will neva heal. He’s jus been playing on it n they give him a lotta rest. He’s still very good, but probably won’t eva b at the level he played at earlier in his career.

Along with the often injured Peat. both Ruiz n Trev are coming off of injuries. Like u said, Pennings was the worst cause he’s been missing so much valuable time developing n working on his technique. Even C Erik McCoy has been bitten by the injury bug n missed multiple games the last 2 seasons.

And THIS is potentially our starting 5 O linemen this season! 😖😖😖

In terms of depth, rookie Nick Saldiveri ( who I REALLY like!) also suffered an injury ( calf) during OTAs. But da Saints did keep many of their backup O linemen n added a few, like Billy Price who’ll give us MUCH needed depth at C!

Man, right now, I’m just hoping n 🙏🏾 we can b fully healthy on da O line goin into the start of TC, let alone goin into da start of da season!! 😂 But seriously, not only is important for them to develop chemistry n continuity as a unit, but we also have 2 possibly 3 new RBs, n esp a new QB in DC4.

IMO, on paper, this is a solid talented O line. An improved RB room will only enhance their run blocking. A QB like Carr, who’s gonna get da ball out quicker n effectively in the short/intermediate passing game, will only help em in pass protection. So IF all goes well, this O line can actually end up being VERY good!!!

But can they jus stay HEALTHY???

We’ll see!!!!

Trevor is a top-heavy plodder in a position that requires nimble footwork above all else.

I just can't see him as a fit for the LT position at all.

Presumably, hopefully, our pro scouts know more than I do.
Not sure where you're getting 'top-heavy plodder' - Trevor Penning had a better 3-cone and 20 yd shuttle than Terron Armstead. He's a big man, but incredibly athletically talented.

His deficiencies in pass pro relate to technical refinement and experience, not physical limitations.

Yup, I was shocked when I found that out, he is just as athletic (quickness wise) as TA.....if he can grow and improve the technical part of the position, he has the potential to be great.....athleticism is not the issue here....

I think the scouts liked his size n athleticism: 6’7, 325 lbs. 34 1/4 in arms, 10 1/8 in hands, 600 lb squat, AND a 28 in vertical, 4.89 forty, 7.25 3 cone, which are all very good numbers for a guy his size. But they also knew that he was “raw” n would need time to to learn n improve his techniques. The good news was they already had a decent/capable starting LT in Hurst. So they felt it best to draft a player like Penning NOW, n give him a year r so to develop. But Pennings injuries have REALLY set dat plan back!!! 🤬 Right now, I’m jus hoping he’ll n 💯 for the start of TC, otherwise, his “setback” will continue! We’ll see

Last year was the one time I actually knew what Mickey Loomis was going to do in the draft. I knew it would be Chris Olave and Trevor Penning in the first round. Truly, I did. And, I was all for it. I think that if Trevor hadn't gotten hurt, we'd be applauding that class now.

I had heard that about Ram as well. What is the injury he has that won't heal. Why will surgery not be able to fix the problem

Alontae Taylor smoke Monday could bring fire to the New Orleans saints defense / locked on saints

I believe this is the video I watched that talked about this. It's in the last segment if anyone wants to go to YouTube and watch it

Yep! TP played at Norhern Iowa, a mid major program. He was DOMINANT there n relied mostly on his size power n athleticism. Technique? No so much! Again, the Saints KNEW he would have to improve his technique to play at the Pro level, but felt confident he could. I think he can too, But FIRST, he’s gotta get n stay HEALTHY! Here’s to hoping he will b 💯 come TC, n go from there! 👍🏾

Meanwhile, I’m hoping TPs learned a lot in his rookie season, as he transitioned from college to the NFL. He now has a better idea of what to expect. He has a better understanding of what his strengths n esp his weaknesses are n what he needs to do to improve. So overall, he should b more comfortable n confident this time around heading into TC!

So jus go out there n do YOU big guy!

Yep, but he has a lot of work to do first. You're right. His technique has to improve. He has the athleticism down and in spades. He proved that @ the NFL combine
