Saints Cap Moves: Derek Carr restructured, Erik McCoy restructured; J. Williams released; cap space is at -$8,543,537 (318 Viewers)

Context matters. You are using words like tone setter and culture… after 2025 Carr is gone and players like Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, Honeybadger are going to be extremely close to gone if not gone.

If Carr was 24 years old not on a 40mil per year contract and our defensive leaders weren’t in their mid 30s absolutely a 9-10 win team fighting for division is great for the future. But getting a 14-17 draft pick when the entire team will start to be rebuilt and leaders will be gone in 2026 makes zero sense to me. And I don’t think that’s a ridiculous view to have.

Oh ok...so the same 3 or 4 older players everyone always references when talking about how our roster is so old (it's not by the way; it's league average) will be gone...I guess we have no current young guys on the team, won't be signing any long term free agents, or selecting any draft picks this year either huh?

Nope...our incredibly old roster with the same only 3-4 old guys everyone talks about will get no benefit out of a good season this season a year or two from now.

Whatever you say.

I always felt 2027 was Loomis' actual endgame in terms of a clean cap. This just reinforces that belief. Carr's contract structure was a disaster and if this team wanted any chance of being able to participate in bidding wars for a guy like Adebo if it comes to it, they'd have to restructure Carr.

I'm pretty sure people can quote a sentence or two from an article on a pay site. They just can't quote huge chunks of the article.
That rule is simple, direct, and complete within itself. If you can't understand simple wording, then your interpretation of basically anything falls into question.

Yeah, @ELLIASJWILLIAMS is spot-on in his assessment. :ROFLMAO:

The old roster argument is one of the dumbest ones on here.

There are a lot of things they could have wanted to change about the contract besides just a pay cut. They could have wanted to change the length, they could have wanted to remove the no trade clause, they could have wanted to add or remove guaranteed income or bonuses, they could have wanted to add or remove incentives.

People are mistakenly assuming the only thing the Saints could have wanted was a paycut. They could have wanted several other things. Maybe they did want him to take a paycut, but we don't know that. People have just assumed that's what it was.
Eh? If they wanted to remove the no trade clause, Carr would have to agree to it. How does that make sense?

Also, you can’t change the length of a contract after it’s been signed and removing guaranteed income is literally a paycut.

You’ve, inadvertently, just said they were trying to agree to a pay cut, because everything else you listed is either impossible or illogical.

You’re talking about establishing culture when the QB (most important player on any team) and the defense leaders will not be here. If you don’t see how some can find the fallacy I that then yes “whatever you say” is all I have as well.

Extremely odd.

“Several NFL sources believe that Carr was open to testing the market in recent weeks”. Hilarious stuff.

David and Darren must be working overtime on the PR front, because there was never going to be a single team willing to pay him close to what he’s currently on.

Not as dumb as a single sentences that provide zero useful info or evidence.

As of 8/31/24 we had the 4th oldest starters in the league. Sorry you disagree but it’s a fact and a relevant one if someone is discussing establishing culture when majority of leaders will be gone in a year. If you had to guess did our players get younger since 2024 or older?

There needs to be buyouts so GMs quit moving cap debt for next year and so on
If you’re talking about a buyout where it doesn’t count against the cap then it will never happen. The owners will never agree to a cap system like the joke the NBA calls a cap have. In the NFL if a payment is made to a player it MUST be count against the cap at some point.

I've already broke it down in other posts. We are 16th and that's only b/c of Carr, DD, Cam and Taysom. Remove those guys and we drop significantly. It's not hard to understand.

So you’re saying Adam Schefter was wrong in his calculations?

And you’re making my point. That’s all our leaders, remove those guys and THEN culture is rebuilt/established.
