I agree. Good thing the Saints were doing the opposite of advising a coverup. They were helping with a strategy on releasing the names of the guilty priests going back to the 1960's in the New Orleans Archdiocese. And from their statement, they gave the best PR advice there is in this kind of situation.

I'm a religious person myself. This frustrates me on many levels. It frustrates me that the Saints went into the relationship. It frustrates me that it yet again reveals hypocrisy within religion which drives people away from God. If my Church sought outside secular help to smooth over a HUGE ethical/legal error, I'd find another church. The whole thing just stinks.

The Saints have been associated with the church since their inception though. We were named the Saints because of the team being awarded to the city on the Catholic holiday of All Saints Day (in a majority Catholic city), have had priests say masses with prayers for the football team's success and Mr. Benson and Gayle have been tight with the archbishop for a long time (and the former archbishop as well).

And I don't think they were really trying to smooth anything over by this time. The cat was already out of the bag. The priests had all already been identified and defrocked and this was just about how to release the names to the media and law enforcement in the least damaging way possible. I guess you can say that's smoothing it over, but there wasn't anything that could be done to smooth things over in this situation. All the Church could do was what they ended up being advised by the Saints to do, according to their statement.

Obviously. But if this story was never written and the Saints communications were just entered into the record in the case they pertain to, no one would ever have even cared about it if you believe the statement put out by the Saints.

Regardless of the reasoning... why would anyone in a free society willingly give over thousands of emails for scrutiny, completely free of context?

I don't know ... just trying to think of way to kind of wave a magic wand over all this and make it go away.

The Saints ownership and staff have had a working relationship with the archdiocese for decades. And the Catholic Church is so big that when a section of it does wrong -- or even many sections -- it's easy to look upon the church folks you do know and work with locally and tell yourself "it's not them -- it's others".

Incomprehensibly stupid to get involved in this situation no matter how benign the intent. I'm completely dismayed and disappointed. Just when I think the dumbest thing the saints could do is follow through on the alleged Burrow trade, this story rises up and says "hold my beer". Who on earth could possibly think it wise to get anywhere near this cesspool of evil.

Why are they working w/ the Church at all in this capacity? That's not what they're suppose to be doing. Sure, if asked you can say maybe do this or do that but not like this. Now, it looks like some cover up in a major way since they don't want to release emails.

That's not a crime, but it's the same thing as advising a child molester of the best way to beat the case. It's despicable behavior that should be and would be condemned by society.
