Saints hire Grady Brown, Robert Blanton, and Jay Rodgers to defensive staff (12 Viewers)

Interesting. I wonder if the Steelers let him leave with a lateral move or if we have given him some sort of enhanced job title.

EDIT: I just read that his contract had expired in Pittsburgh.

That's a lot of DB coaches that they have hired, but I like the idea behind it. Staley is a LB coach by trade and all reports are that his weaknesses have been in the secondary. I like hiring a bunch of DB coaches to make up for Staley's perceived deficiency in the defensive backfield.
All for it.

The skinny on what likely lead to his departure.

Communication issues between 2nd and 3rd level defenders plagued the Steelers while Minkah Fitzpatrick and J Porter Jr seemingly regressed.

He and Aaron Curry both were not retained

I think that is a misnomer. I think they just hired another defensive coach with a title yet to be announced.

Interesting about the communication issues. The Steelers defense actually had the best EPA/play when running cover 6 and the 4th best EPA/play when running quarters, two coverage systems I expect us to use frequently this upcoming season.

Despite the success, the Steelers didn’t use those coverages much. They were middle of the pack in their usage of cover 6 and 2nd to last in their usage of quarters.

Yes. But they have now hired 3 guys that are either defensive passing game coordinators or DB coaches. Which means they hired three guys that coach defensive backs. I don't know and I don't really care what title each one gets. Maybe one is the CB Coach, one is the Safety coach, and one is the defensive passing game coordinator. Maybe they name one Czar of the Secondary. Maybe they name one of them LB coach of the players who play behind and are smaller than the LBs, which seem highly unlikely and silly, but I don't really care what their titles are.

The point is that Staley is bringing in a bunch of guys with experience coaching DBs which is a perceived weakness in Staley's prior coaching record. That seems like a good way to approach things to improve on your perceived weakness.
