Article Saints interested in Brandon Staley and George Edwards for defensive coordinator (27 Viewers)

If I am not mistaken, Rapoport said Eagles cornerback coach Roy Anderson may be another option for coordinator.

I'd rather take a chance on Roy Anderson, Tracy Rocker or maybe even DJ Eliot. I think Aaron Curry may just be the best option, but there are zero ties to him from Moore. But Rapoport was likely just spit balling ideas. He does that extremely often. Just spit balls idea, then others take it as if he received some kind of inside information.

There’s nothing to feel good about. People just forget about what occurred when he was the Chargers HC. He was play calling, put that defense together and game planned for it. The defense was so terribly bad. All you have to do is watch the game before he got fired. The play calling was so terrible, the players completely quit on him in the 3rd quarter. Herbert was trying to move the offense, but the defense was awful. I remember watching it and feeling so embarrassed for Staley. Next day he was fired.

People are just excited that we may switch to a Fangio base 3-4 system, which is also exciting to me. But we’ve only seen 1 good defense from Staley that had Aaron Donald at DT and several good players littered across the field.

I’m sure a lot don’t remember this but he did NOT do 3-4 while with the Rams. They were still a base 4-3 (enforced by McVay). He didn’t coordinate a 3-4 till he went to the Chargers and it utterly tanked.

I'm half wondering if Staley would be viewed as a bridge DC. It's late to be looking for coordinators. So it is possible they're saying "Let's get a DC to help us change to the defense we want, and if he doesn't work out, we can find someone else when we have more time in the offseason". Entirely possible. But I hope thats the view.

It's also possible they're thinking they'll stay in a 4-3 and will enforce that on Staley as McVay did.
I never did pay much attention to the Chargers but from reading up on him he was adamant that he controlled the defense as a head coach. To the point where it got him fired. He also had Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack to work with.

On first read introducing a Vic Fangio defense with someone that has former HC experience is exciting but it seems like it could be a hire that turns into a let down. And I doubt he'd be booted after 1 year especially since there's a lack of talent on defense to place the blame on. Could be another Gibbs for us.

The Rams were a base 3-4 before Staley got there, and definitely implemented Fangio's 3-4 ideas when Staley was DC.

He's a good defensive mind. There's no doubt about that. My concern is that Harbaugh came in and immediately made that same defense that Staley couldn't turn around elite in his first year there.

I don't put much stock into articles about assistant coaches when we don't offically have a head coach yet. It doesn't matter how much interest "the Saints" have in a specific assistant. All that matters is how much interest the new head coach has. He is the one who will hire assistants.

Does it really matter who we get? I mean we freak n stunk last year. If it any worse we will draft a manning
A lot of our games were close. We’re not nearly as bad as the fans think we are. A great draft to fill in a ton of depth. And luck with injuries, and maybe we can make a little noise. Sometimes being the underdog with 0 fan expectations allows a team to play loose.

I think Staley is at worst a good DC and you know he's a guy that if given talent, he can put together a really good defense. Very few if any guys can be "elite" if they don't have enough talent. I mean look at Fangio. When he had the Dome Patrol he was "elite" and then he bounced around the league for years as a good DC until he got to Philly with their talent and was elite again. Fangio is the same guy he always was, but talent is what turns him into elite. I think that's probably true for all the good DCs. They are all good but for them to be elite, they need the talent. Probably also true for OCs, but I think scheme can make a team better than it's parts on offense and an elite QB can make a mediocre talent look better.

I think most of these things are based more on who people know Moore wants or people with prior relationships with Moore. Some of it is speculation but some of it is likely based on things people have heard regarding who Moore wants to work with and who he has talked to in the past.
