Saints release QB Jake Luton & RB Derrick Gore (3 Viewers)

Gore isn't a surprise. Not a lot of mileage but he's already 28 and it's a crowded backfield now. For those interested, he played college ball at Alabama before transferring to ULM. He was with the Chiefs during the 2021 regular season and I remember him from a primetime preseason game where he had some nice carries.

I guess Luton isn't really a surprise, either, though I would have thought he fit that fourth QB profile for training camp.
 
I'm actually surprised that they released Luton. That leaves them with just 3 QBs (Carr, Winston, Haener) to go through training camp. Maybe they plan to pick someone else up to ease the TC load.

Yes, I know some will think, "but what about Hill!?!" Hill may be an emergency QB during the season, but teams typically carry that 4th QB to lessen the load on their better QBs just during TC then release that QB (or place on PS) prior to the season. Hill will be too busy working in his myriad positions.

Luton would have been perfect in the TC role.

I guess it's possible Luton is somebody we could see back, since his market is basically camp body somewhere, but I agree with you that I'd expect to see a fourth QB added prior to camp, whoever that ends up being.

They do need to let the Swiss Army Knife stay loose and fresh by throwing a few, too … 🤷🏻‍♂️

They do, and I'm sure he'll throw some passes, but that doesn't lessen the load on the other 3 guys. They need a guy to just play QB and Luton would have been perfect since he knows the Saints system.
