Saints restructure Carl Granderson, Cesar Ruiz and Khalen Saunders to get under the cap (10 Viewers)

There was a lot of individual talent on defense, they didn’t play as a cohesive unit. The same can’t be said for the offense, we had no true tightend, lack of depth at RB, no backup qb, and line depth was lacking.
Indeed, and the other hope, especially on defense, is that the likely change of scheme will fit the roster better than the previous one apparently did.

And just like that, the cap:

But, But, But Loomis and the Saints are the only team who has to utilize the cap this way, no other team in the league has to restructure player contracts to be in cap compliance....

Yeah I hear you there. My daughter is 21 now.
I was watching Dora’s Halloween Special with my daughter when she was 2. She said “this is the scary part daddy”

“I’m scared already, can I hold your hand?”

“No. You hold your own hand”

She is 12 now and I know I’d get the same response :hihi:

Back to football, Saunders is serviceable and can help hold down the fort as we rebuild

I could see him as a 5-tech DE lined up next to Chase as a stand-up LB in the base 3-4. Bink has good lateral quickness. It's his bull rush that has never been super impressive.

I think the lateral quickness might also mean he can play the 4i DT in Staley's 4-2-5 Nickel. The lateral quickness should allow him to shed and play the gap and a half scheme to clog the middle allowing the LBs to run free and one of the Safeties to rotate down to put 7 in the box on a run play after the snap.

Staley mentioned yesterday that he won't really know what schemes they can play or where guys fit until he gets them on the field in the Spring. He also mentioned that he wants to be multiple and use different defenses depending on opponent and the personnel he has.

He does like a base 3-4 because it allows you to be more creative, but it doesn't appear that he is married to it if something else would work better against a different opponent.

My son is 25, about to be 26 but he was the same exact way towards to the "Doodle Bob" episode of Spongebob when he was 5 or 6. Lol! We still talk about that to this day when we get together for a visit.

Ruiz is automatically a Saint the next two years because he has a terrible team contract.

As an inconsistent vet drafted in the first round years ago, he carried an unfathomable dead cap of $20M in 2024.

Now that his contract has been restructured, he carries a 22M dead cap in 2025 and $17M in 2026 - with 0 cap savings for cutting him post-June 1.

It's not until 2027 that his contract normalizes, in cap, dead cap, and cap savings if released post-June 1.

Kellen, figure this guy out.... his position, the guys next to him, etc.. I believe he has a higher talent ceiling than we've seen.

We girl dad's rule!

Does this restructure of Ruiz enable a trade or does it ensure he stays on the roster?

I know he's young, but many he just doesn't play physical at a physical position.
Need two guards, truth be told.
And just like that to dead money at some point:

😂

This all day. Absolutely hilarious to me that some folks refuse to see this. Or they’re just incapable. Is what it is lol.

He has improved from his rookie season but we still could use an upgrade there. Big time.
