Saints Sign Ex-Browns LB Craig Robertson, 3 year deal (merged) (1 Viewer)

With all the players we've acquired this offseason Robertson seems like the forgotten man. What I love about signing him is that it's almost all upside. He's a player whose in the prime of his career who could possibly end up being our opening day starter. Or he could provide depth. Or he could be a total bum but even if he's a bum the best part is that we didn't break the bank to get him.

So unlike recent higher priced FA acquisitions I don't see any way this signing could turn out to be an unmitigated disaster. This could be one of those under the radar signings that ends up being a steal. Robertson is young, he has good size, and he has good athleticism. I mean, can he be worse than Hawthorne?

The Robertson signing reminds me a lot of the K. Lewis signing. Lesser known player entering his prime and coming off a good season after garnering high praise from the fanbase, team, and coaches. Here's to hoping he gets anywhere close to the contributions!

"People are just drawn to Craig because of his infectious personality."

Robertson, who earned a graduate degree in program management, plans to pursue a career in college administration. He believes he could be a valuable fundraiser for an institution....

...His value extends beyond the field. Robertson's locker has a gravitational pull with teammates being drawn by the occupant's charisma and caring. He thinks nothing of mentoring Kirksey even though the rookie's progression costs him snaps.

Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil called Robertson a locker room "spark plug" and asked him to address the defense on the eve of a game, an honor usually reserved for older players.

Defensive end Billy Winn said Robertson has leadership qualities similar to former Browns' defensive captain D'Qwell Jackson. But Jackson never could make teammates and coaches laugh the way Robertson can with his jokes, hijinks and energy.
"He's a funny dude," Winn said
.
"He comes with a lot of different experiences and really paints a picture when he tells you a story.

"But when it's time to get down to business he's the best in the game. He learned from the best, he learned from DQ."

Sounds like Robertson will be a perfect fit to match Cam Jordan's personailty! :ezbill:

:gosaints:

I'm excited about our LB's this year. We've pretty much done a redo on our whole defense, but these guys are definitely flying under the radar. Which is fine by me. I've been trying not to get my hopes up too much, but it's kind of hard not to when you read about people like Robertson.

In 2009, we had loads of great/perfect team players, who also had some legit NFL talent: Will Smith, Vilma, Fujita, Sharper (little did we know), Greer, Harper, McCray. Most of those guys were in effect solid second-tier FAs, certainly not top-tier (maybe Greer).

Further to Barnwell's article about our cap space and (I agree) probably overpaying for Fleener, it looks like we really got back to our roots in defense and spent very wisely.

Even accounting for the fact that I am a desperately addicted homer, I am quietly very excited about the upcoming season.

I work with a Steeler fan and he has said a couple of times .... "I'm glad he is out of the AFC. He had a habit of baiting Big Ben in to poor throws and INT's".

He could be the key ingredient this season for us getting off the field on 3rd downs. He is a very good coverage LB. I really like this signing.

Wait, what? LBers can do that? That would be a breathe of fresh air to see.

Last year our LBs just ran around with their hands in the air yelling "OMG!" on pass plays.

I honestly believe that Robertson is a HUGE part of the Saints' plans to send Brees out with a couple of big Super Bowl pushes (ala Elway & Manning) starting in 2017.

He, like Peat, Rankins, and Bell, is basically on the team a year earlier than what was a dire need. But, procuring talent with that schedule is one of the things that better teams do and poor teams don't. He is going to make for a fantastic sub-package LB corp with Anthony for the next 4+ years.

I would not be surprised in the least to see him beat out Ellerbe this year.

It'll be a pleasant change in our LB play :9:
