New Orleans Saints star wide receiver Michael Thomas played some as a freshman at Ohio State University before then facing the unusual situation of being redshirted as a sophomore in 2013.
Thomas told the audience at the inaugural Best of the Bayou Prep Awards Banquet put on by The Courier and Daily Comet newspapers on Wednesday night at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center that the redshirt season in college helped drive him to be the best player he can be.
Thomas went through a question-and-answer session with local NFL analyst and college football expert Mike Detillier and offered advice to the hundreds of student-athletes in attendance about how to handle adversity.
“You just have to be able to humble yourself, make a plan, go from there and attack it,” Thomas said about how he reacted to being redshirted in his second season at Ohio State. “That experience taught me the best lesson of my life and helped me become the player I am today. Just know there will be ups and downs, but it’s how you respond to situations and how you control your respond to those situations.”
Thomas is now one of the top wide receivers in the NFL.
