Update Saints to interview Mike McCarthy in person during this week, Jan. 26-Feb. 1 [Underhill: McCarthy would have to be the current favorite] (59 Viewers)

One thing on the lack of trust in Loomis front is that I think Loomis will give McCarthy more control than any young coach since McCarthy has so much experience. Loomis is going to have more trust that McCarthy knows what he is doing.
Loomis gives all his coaches control, he's said repeatedly he believes in letting a HC build his roster. This notion that Loomis is the final decision behind a ton of stuff keeps getting thrown around and I don't believe it's fully accurate.

Whether it would have been Joe Brady or Aaron Glenn, they would have figured out what the strength and weakness of the coach were and then tried to support him w/ the right hires.

If we end up with McCarthy, we could have done much worse. But the above, it just doesnt hold water.

Detroit went full rebuild. They went 3-13 in Dan Campbells first year. 9-7 in his 2nd year. 12-5. Then 15-2. He went +6, +3, +3 in wins after his first season.

He had an interim job prior, but Detroit was his first permanent HC gig.

This is a perfect opportinity for a young coach to build himself and a franchise. Its going to take energy, and drive. You can make a case both ways. A young, unproven guy will be hungry to create something. Does McCarthy have the energy to lead a rebuild at 61?

Sean Payton walked through the door in his first job as a HC, with a franchise and a city totally decimated, coming off a 3-13 season. What he faced as a rookie HC was far less ideal that what the next HC of this franchise will face.

I 1000% disagree that we have to have an old man lead this team. We need energy, ideas and hunger. Give me the younger OC over McCarthy. Let him build a name for himself along with rebuilding this franchise.

And we need to be patient with him in 2025. Its a long game. A 3-14, 4-13 2025 might be a necessity to get back to competing for Lombardis.
Why would MM even take this job? He makes sense going into a rebuild team trying to breakthrough not a team going directly into a two year long rebuild. You usually get a young coach for a rebuild.

He took an 8-8 cowboy team that was in an healthy cap and somewhat stable QB situation.

At 61 years old... The only thing he should be doing is either winning championships or securing retirement checks. We look like the latter.

You should probably ask MM that question. He's apparently going to interview with the Saints and he isn't to my knowledge scheduled to interview with any other teams since he missed out on the Bears job.

I know that Loomis gives his coaches lots of control, but that developed over years of a relationship with Payton and DA. I would think that a young coach would have to prove worthy of his trust before he gets full control.

Because perhaps unlike many, he isn’t all doom and gloom about everything and as an outside observer sees a team that isn’t as bad as it is being made out to be here.

He also gets the privilege of getting a full understanding how our cap situation operates and why it isn’t as disastrous as it is being made out to be by outside observers.

Ehhhhh... That's copium. The cap situation is public information and the maneuver to figuring ways around are disastrous that completely cripples the team.

The reason he would be okay with is that he is friends with Loomis and he'll get paid well to take on a bad situation in a league where people view him as a 2nd/3rd option at best for HC. Bears picked Ben Johnson over him. A complete unknown at a historic $13 million per year. That's what MM value is at around the league.

Did Payton?

Or here's another way to look at it. If you vet a guy, go through these interviews, and you agree w/ his vision...why does he have to convince you to allow him the autonomy to manifest that vision? Kind of defeats the purpose yes?

The same exact sequence of events remains the only news pertaining to the Saints.

In-person interview two candidates whom JUST SO HAPPEN to satisfy the Rooney Rule requirement, followed by interviewing McCarthy, who remains linked to no other teams.

I disagree but if that’s what you believe, good for you.

Could be. I do seem to recall that Payton didn't have as much influence early in his career, but I could be wrong.

Yes, MM's value is below the hottest young OC that teams have been drooling about hiring for the past two years.

It really couldn’t be more obvious. McCarthy is our guy, 100%.

I'm not as high on Kubiak as you are, but maybe so. But for that to happen McCarthy would have to significantly change his offensive scheme from a traditional West Coast system to the Shanahan/Kubiak system. Not sure he would want to do that.

It's hard to know what we have in Kubiak due to the injuries and DA's utter and total incompetence.....but my feeling is that if the new HC is anyone other than Rizzi then Kubiak will go elsewhere......

There is a really good reason the Bears are the Bears.....I don't think this bolsters the no to MM argument....we will see....
