It's been a while, but if I remember right, Mel Brooks or one of the producers wanted his blessing to do the sequel. I think they hot his "permission" to do the original. I don't remember the exact details tho.

I'm pretty sure the only condition was that Brooks couldn't sell Spaceballs merchandise

i think it was like the Weird Al situation. He doesn't need permission, but he likes to get it.

I think that it was just a gentleman's agreement that they hashed out before the movie instead of in the court system after the movie.
