NEW ORLEANS — Fast Freddy is back in black and gold.
Longtime special teams standout and locker-room leader Fred McAfee, 38, returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since being cut shortly after the Saints returned to New Orleans in late August from training camp in Jackson.
Coach Sean Payton had talked about how difficult it was to cut McAfee, a Mississippi native who he described as everything a coach wants in a veteran leader.
However, Payton said at the time some younger players deserved a chance. With several players injured and with the Saints looking for a spark in the stretch drive, Payton brought back McAfee.
