That’s possible but that’s a lot of money to eat and then pay another player on top of that. He’s cheaper to keep. If he’s not worth a roster spot I would be shocked.

I would think with the new coaching staff and a losing team pretty much everybody would be considered for release. Or at least they would all be explored financially and performance wise.

Yeah that seems like a good guess. His cap hit is 9th in the NFL for safeties, 12th for base salary and he's older than everyone else in the top 20. He has a 1M roster bonus that becomes guaranteed on the 16th, I guess we'll know by then at the latest.

Too many flashbacks last season with him throwing his hands up 3-5 yards away from the play rather than putting in any effort. With the safety depth in this draft and a lot of good-decent guys available Day 2 and beyond, I can see them letting him go.

Not all. I'm a LSU fan and Mathieu can go. It doesn't matter what the cap hit is, I'd rather roll with a rookie than have that lack of effort, business decision guy on the roster going forward. Yes, he's good in the community, but giving up on plays isn't a good look when we are trying to change the culture.
