Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline: “I’m told Saints are considering releasing Tyrann Mathieu” [Tyrann: “Slow news day....I am New Orleans!”] (37 Viewers)

Considering a release? I’m sure they’ve considered releasing many players. However, his cap number is $11.3M and dead money is $12.3M. They save less than $1M if he is released. Doesn’t appear to be worth it. I think he plays it out this year.

The only thing I can think of is that this would fall under the realm of a “football decision.”

He’s coasted a bit on film. I could see the new staff not caring much for him.

That’s possible but that’s a lot of money to eat and then pay another player on top of that. He’s cheaper to keep. If he’s not worth a roster spot I would be shocked.

I would think with the new coaching staff and a losing team pretty much everybody would be considered for release. Or at least they would all be explored financially and performance wise.

Kind of sounds like an agent trying to gage his player's value after the team asked him to take a pay cut.

I'd hate to see him go because he's a great guy in the community, but we do need to upgrade and get younger at Safety.

Yeah that seems like a good guess. His cap hit is 9th in the NFL for safeties, 12th for base salary and he's older than everyone else in the top 20. He has a 1M roster bonus that becomes guaranteed on the 16th, I guess we'll know by then at the latest.

LSU fans refuse to see the truth, it's funny. Guy plays with absolutely zero effort.

Not all. I'm a LSU fan and Mathieu can go. It doesn't matter what the cap hit is, I'd rather roll with a rookie than have that lack of effort, business decision guy on the roster going forward. Yes, he's good in the community, but giving up on plays isn't a good look when we are trying to change the culture.
