The case for Desmond Ridder (1 Viewer)

He's my #3 liked QB after Baby hands and Little Willis...also, why is he so greasy looking?

LOL! I ain't dating him, so I don't care what he looks like. But if he can play football well (and he can!) and the Saints think he has a future as an NFL caliber QB, bring him into the fold!

In another thread on SR, we discussed Parcells' 7 Rules for a franchise QB. The consensus in that thread was that 1) Parcells was no QB guru and we'd prefer to know Andy Reid's rules; and 2) Parcells' rules were from the late 80s and early 90s and the game (both college and pro) has evolved since then. I speculated in that thread that some of his 7 rules are just multiple ways of saying the same thing (3-year starter; played 30 games; senior; graduated) and I reformulated his rules to reflect today's realities (2-year starter; 75% winning percentage; etc...)

Ridder was 1 of only 2 QBs in this class to meet Parcells' "reformulated rules". As an added bonus, Ridder continues to show upward movement in his abilities; he has gotten better each year, suggesting he hasn't peaked yet. And he's elevated the play of the team around him; Cincinnati isn't known as a football powerhouse, but in his 2-year tenure he got that program into the college playoffs. I'm not overly impressed with any of this year's QB prospects, but if a QB is to be taken by the Saints this year, I want it to be Ridder. But only if it's NOT in the 1st round, AND only if he sits for a year and marinates in the system and the playbook. I think he has the best chance to be successful in the NFL. But that's probably 2 seasons away. JMO...

He'll likely not be a top 3 qb off the board. At the end of the day, i'm not totally sure why. He's a more ready NFL player than the others. HE throws a very very very solid ball with very good enough arm talent. He's shown to me to be very accurate with his passes. (I think accuracy is the biggest need of a qb with a WR1 named Michael Thomas) He's a heck of an athlete, can be mobile in today's game. On thinner side, but has nfl height and proved to be a winner in college.

For the Saints, transitioning to a defensive minded ball club, need a steady presence on the cheap would be terrific getting this team out of cap hell (yes it is a thing for all you non believers). I would not be against Saints drafting a player at 18 but trying to fight there way back to the bottom of the 1st or top of the 2nd to go after Desmond Ridder. I believe he's a great fit here.
Ridder is an inconsistent and not very accurate thrower. Over the course of his college career. He has improved every year, but not enough to where he warrants the #18 selection in the draft, IMO.

I would not draft him until the 4th round at best.
