Five Post-Draft Reasons Saints Fans Ought To Be Sick And Tired Of Mickey Loomis
It’s not that the Saints did a terrible job altogether. The first pick, Sheldon Rankins, is without doubt a quality player who can help the Saints’ awful defensive line. The second pick, Michael Thomas, is a tall, physical wide receiver who can get open deep and that fills a huge hole in the Saints’ passing game. If you stop there, the draft actually looks pretty good.

But you can’t stop there, which is why this year’s draft was once again a head-shaker and just another bit of evidence that this team’s front-office management isn’t what it needs to be to make the Saints a championship-quality team.

Note: I haven't read this, so don't hate me for sharing it. Tear it up if you can.

I'm sorry but you just can't judge a draft (either in the positive or the negative) just days after it happened. It's fine for "draft grades" and message board talk - all in good fun in the off-season - but calling for fans to turn against the team leadership is idiotic IMO.

It leaves no room for the Marques Colston and Jahri Evans-type players. It leaves no room to see whether a player like Bell did indeed justify trading up and not taking another position with the price paid. It's just a foolish exercise.

1. We traded away one draft pick to move up to acquire Bell, not two.
2. We traded away one draft pick (next year) to move up to acquire Onyemata, not two.
3. The Saints used free agency to stock their linebacking corps; they didn't need to add another one just to draft one from LSU. At guard, Alexander is a horrible scheme fit; the Saints require athletic linemen while Alexander is a slow-footed plodder.
4. It's fair to criticize the Saints for not drafting a guard, but we can't expect them to reach for one. They obviously wanted a guard, but the value didn't work out. Now this author says the Saints "needed to draft two guards"? Ridiculous. Lelito is a competent and improving starter, while Kelemete is a decent versatile backup, and Peat has a good chance to start at guard as well.
5. We have lots of pass rushers: Kikaha, Fairley, Rankins, Jordan, Gwacham, Anthony. Many of these guys aren't proven; fair enough, but neither would any rookie. And any success by Lasco won't make Murphy any more of a wasted pick. With or without Lasco, if Murphy doesn't justify his spot, he won't make it. Is anyone upset that Pierre Thomas "made" Antonio Pittman a wasted pick? With or without Thomas, Pittman wound up not being able to play for anyone. That's what made him a wasted pick.

The author is a self-important [insert insult of choice here].

Ignorance is a bliss, and this guy is blissful. He can't not see beyond draft weekend, and that is a problem.

- He starts understanding that the first two picks were the right ones.

- He hates trading up for Von Bell, a "back up safety". This guy just does not understand multiple packages, or the future. Depending on production we can be seeing the last year of Jairus Byrd, so no point discussing it.

- He really, really hates that the dare to trade up for a guy he has never heard of. Yep, ignorance is a bliss.

- He also complains that no LSU players were drafted again. I can say that this year was particularly bad for LSU and the draft, so to make this argument on this year, is frankly, lame.

- Who's playing guard, Mickey? Well, I think time will tell, but I can say that I feel more comfortable today then last thursday, even when we didn't draft one.

- Is there a pass rusher in our future? Well, I think there are several options at this point: Kikaha, Tull, Edebali, Fairley, Rankins, Jordan, Vacarro, Bell, and maybe, that Canadian guy you don't know about.

I think it's time to close this thread. No point to discussed uninformed opinions.

I'm noticing a recurring theme in the criticisms, written elsewhere, or expressed here, about this draft - some variation of "I'm not saying I don't like the players drafted, but..."

To me, it reeks of looking for something to criticize.

Hey, these are good players and all, but I would have preferred the Saints did B instead of A and ended up with these other players...even though a different approach might not have ended up with the desired, speculated-upon outcome, anyway.

And then this kind of criticism is absurd:

3. Continues to refuse to draft anybody from LSU.

In team history, these are the players drafted by the Saints from LSU (via Pro Football Reference):

1969 11 267 Tommy Morel
1975 7 163 Steve Rogers
1981 10 249 Hokie Gajan
1985 7 179 Eric Martin
1986 2 31 Dalton Hilliard
1989 4 106 Michael Mayes
1997 6 165 Nick Savoie
2004 2 50 Devery Henderson
2010 4 123 Al Woods

It's not as if Loomis came along and suddenly LSU is getting snubbed by the team.

Tear it up if you can.

Since its founding in December 2009, The Hayride has been Louisiana’s premier conservative political commentary site. We’re a group blog covering Louisiana and national politics and current affairs. Our work has been referenced by such national sites as Big Government, The American Spectator, Michelle Malkin, Hot Air, RedState and Townhall.com, among others.

I question the logic of a political commentary site deciding to do draft dissection as nothing in that supports them having football knowledge.

Furthermore, a look at the authors other topics shows nothing indicating any type of football background or insider status.

3. Continues to refuse to draft anybody from LSU.
It’s not some crazy coincidence that the Saints don’t draft or sign LSU players. It’s policy. And when LSU has more alums in the NFL than any other school (that’s likely not going to be the case this fall, as LSU had a bit smaller draft class than normal with only four Tigers drafted), it’s a stupid policy that looks driven more by prejudice, animus or pique than intelligent analysis.

I completely agree with not drafting LSU players as a general policy not from a skill perspective but because of distractions. It would be much harder to keep a rookie NFL player from Louisiana out of trouble/parties/whatever if they're local and have all sorts of pre-existing connections.

I could have gone the rest of my life never learning about the Hayseed site.

"Refusing" to draft LSU players????
He also "refuses" to draft Virginia Cavaliers....and Boston College
Eagles....and Oklahoma Sooners....and...30 other schools....
What a pathetic LSU homer...
That is mind boggling dumb.
