Now that several years have passed since the infamous "Bountygate" I think we can all see that the issue with the Saints was not really about a bounty system. I've always wondered what was really behind all of it. Here are some of the factors but there has to be more:

1. Impending concussion lawsuit.
2. Sean Payton asking for a special clause in his contract that would give him the out if Mickey is gone.

So what are the other reasons?

- Mike Ornstein relationship?
- Vicodin Scandal
- Payton getting a bad reputation around NOLA
- Rita and Gayle not getting along?

What was REALLY behind Bountygate because we all know the Saints didn't really do anything other teams weren't doing.

"What was REALLY behind Bountygate because we all know the Saints didn't really do anything other teams weren't doing."

This is what we want to break down... What were the Saints doing different? Well, for starters they were winning convincingly more times than not while breaking long standing league records with a collection of players that weren't considered "popular" in the league, and looked to be on the verge of another SB. They were the latest team in awhile to win a SB on a long list of teams to not have ever won a SB. They are only team in the south located in the not so politically correct "deep south." What else?

It boils down to this:

a) Impending concussion lawsuit
b) Goodell getting butthurt saying Payton lied to him
c) See a and b above

Now, let's move on. :9:

Some insiders reported that we (Payton) made it a lot worse by fighting the system and disrespecting Goodell in private meetings. We will see whether Brady's arrogance causes similar repurcussions.

Rush Limbaugh just had a good segment on Deflategate and brought up a good point that if Belichick doesn't get suspended then Sean Payton has every right to be upset because Belichick didn't have any idea what was going on with the game balls by his staff which is exactly what Sean was suspended for, not knowing what his players and staff were up to. There's a lot more to it but it's 9:44 PST now and Rush is going to continue talking about it in the next segment if anyone is interested.

Gosh. I almost cant bear to watch the red thumbs you get for mentioning the name not to be mentioned. There will be many. Good luck

Sean Payton knew what was going on, he just didn't think anything of it especially since it's been so widespread throughout the league and for so long to be considered like a time honored tradition. They(media) try very hard and to this day to make it seem the Saints invented the entire concept of "bounties" which is so far from the truth it is infuriating to Saints fans.

You should include this point^.

It will never go away because only a small percentage of people know the truth and the facts behind the whole mess. And unfortunately those people are the people in the courtrooms and the people who cared to research it all and read ALL of the info. Those select few just happen to be Saints fans which just makes us look bias in our defense of the whole situation. Just yesterday an article was talking about how if Payton was held responsible for running a system that paid to injure players then certainly the Patriots should be punished to some extent. Like I said, the perception will NEVER go away...thanks Goodell.

One of those individuals would be Louis Freeh.

There is a scale. The Saints had culpability in bountygate. It was nothing near what the they were accused of doing, but they did break rules.

So when fans say the Saints did nothing it isn't much different than people sliding the scale the other way.

IMO the biggest reason Goodell came down so hard was he wanted an admission that the Saints had a bounty on Favre, and only GW caved. Whether or not the there was a bounty in that game has always been 95% of the case against the Saints. Everything else was fluff. But I believe to this date the NFL and probably many others believe there was a bounty against Farve.
