The Penguin: HBOMax (1 Viewer)

dozens of dead mobsters, including family bosses....underground explosions...new drugs on the street

meanwhile, Bruce is doing donuts in the Batmobile in a Target parking lot

i am obviously nitpicking but nobody even mentioned his name that i can remember...it's just odd that the show almost completely ignored his existence

oh yeah, my wife didn't even know this was a 'Batman' show until i mentioned it around the 3rd episode :hihi:

So, I'm through episode 5 and while it got better in episodes 3 to 5 and it's a good show, I don't think it's a great show. And it still doesn't feel like a "Batman show" or like it's really set in the world of Batman. It's just a mob story that takes lots of elements from The Sopranos. And the show is really saved by the actress playing Sophia Falcone. Her story and the Arkham stuff are the most interesting parts of the show. Which is odd for a show called "The Penguin".

I guess I like my comic book shows to have comic book characters in them and other than calling Ozwald Cobb "Penguin" this show doesn't really have that. It would also be nice if they could throw in a "superhero" or "super villain" here and there.

Didn't see the movie and don't intend to see any future movies. It stands alone as a show just fine.

The movies and shows are being called an "epic crime drama," so it sounds like they nailed it. And the show is about the Penguin, not Batman or Flash. While I would've been fine with Batman showing up, I'll never understand the people that actively do not like him not showing up. Batman would overshadow Penguin in his own show.

It's not that I need Batman to show up. Gotham was great without "Batman" really showing up and frankly outside of Arrow which was pretty good, I thought all those DC shows in the Arrowverse were pretty meh.

Anyway, I think The Penguin is a good show, I was just expecting something more in line with Gotham and this is just pretty straight gritty realism. I mean change his nickname to something else and always call the Falcone's the Gigante's and the show wouldn't be any different from just a regular mob drama. Which is good for what it is, but just not what I was expecting or looking for right now.

It's not like they hid the fact that Matt Reeve's Batman universe is grounded just like Nolan's and that he's focusing on the mob. I'm guessing you didn't see the movie or read any articles talking about it.

I saw the movie one time about a year after it came out and thought it was just okay. But no I didn't read any articles about The Penguin before it came out.

Just completed a binge. I'm surprised this thread is only 3 pages. This was the best series I watched on HBO this year. That includes House of the Dragon. Definitely one of the best shows of the year. The acting was great. The storyline was great. The finish was great.
