That game against the Texans made me very sad.

I just can't believe they "handled" our defensive line like that. Preseason or not, it's upsetting to see us get shoved around so badly.

And if it's because we were "playing vanilla"..is our defense so bad that they need a crazy unorthodox bliz'em from all angles to be effective? I know, I know, it's just preseason and doesn't matter. Then why am I so worried right now?

Yeah, but our defense is built on aggression and moving forward. They are going to look sloppy when playing passive. And they mostly played soft zone which is not what we do.

As far as blocking, I thought the run blocking looked much better and the pass blocking, other than some Charles Brown issues in the second half, looked much improved.

Regardless, it's preseason so you really can't conclude anything. I'm not saying people can't be concerned if they want, but the panic is uncalled for.

I hope to God you are right.

The fact that we ever won a Super Bowl with Jermon Bushrod and Scott Shanle as starters, completely baffles me.

If our defense is actually trying this preseason Green Bay is going to put up at least 50 on us. It's gonna get ugly.

Things I'm hoping for

1)Rogers AND Ellis are BOTH taking plays off because it's the preseason. They are much more talented than they are showing, and the guys they are lining up against, for whatever reason, are giving 100% whereas they are not.

2)Because we aren't scheming, our defense doesn't know how to play football..which includes, tackling, reacting, and basically just playing the game. When we have a scheme they will not only learn how to play basic football again- but be awesome!

3)Our backup safeties are really homeless guys that have somehow snuck in to the Saints camp and are impostors.

And, yeah, I really wish Scott Shanle was not on our team. He is the ultimate in demotivation. He's never once, not once, fired me up in any capacity to enjoy the game of football as a lb. Sack? Big hit? Hitting a dude for a 5 yard loss? No, he just kinda arm- catches guys and gets dragged for a few yards- or misses it.

Preseason? Sorry, this defense has me worried. The fact that we have to play GB at the start of the season? Drew has to play the perfect game. Luckily, this is possible. This team will once again survive on the back of Drew Brees.

I disagree - I think the whole "sky is falling" attitude about the defense is way overblown. I also don't understand why opponents can't find some success against us without our fans going into meltdown. There are, after all, 31 other professional teams in the league with professional caliber players. The Raiders team we played last night went 8-8 last year, had the best rushing offense in the league (and I don't care if McFadden was out - they can still block), and is on the upswing. We held them to 20 points and doubled their score.

The tackles have been getting decent push, but the ends have lost contain at times. Overall, I think the truly vanilla scheme is holding this defense back. I'm not even sure they're shifting their gaps at times. I think they came out of the gate so hard against SF, that they just decided to dial it down and let the position battles play out.

I also don't quite understand the Shanle hate. He is a smart player who just loses on ability from time to time. Better than a Mark Fields-type missile that finds himself out of position every play. I'm glad we don't have a team full of Shanles, but if that's our biggest problem (and I don't know that that's true) we're doing OK. I wouldn't mind an upgrade at that position, but I'm surprised (OK, not really) at the crying about it.

I kind of agree about the backup safeties. Amaya made a couple of plays, but I don't think he is the answer. That position seems to be a holding tank for special teams players. I still don't know whether the team is planning on bringing back Sharper, but I would like to see him in that group, for sure. Jenkins and Harper is a pretty good combination, but there's not much behind them.

Green Bay is going to be a test, for sure, but too many people are writing that game off already. In 2009, we came out of the gate hard. With all of Williams' toys he has to play with this year, I expect the same. GB is going to be a battle.

If we lose to Green Bay you are never allowed to travel to an away game again.

Buzd, Shanle is the worst player on our defense and he has been for 3 years, why wouldn't we complain?

I went to the Atlanta playoff game last year, so I'm already ahead.

Oh, I know you WOULD complain. I'm just saying that he is an average player at one of the least important positions on the defense. Look at how much more yardage was given up when Jason David and Josh Bullocks were manning the secondary. Look how crappy the interior line was before we got Sed Ellis. He may be the worst on our defense now, but if that is the worst we have I'll take it. Most teams are much worse off than us, and they don't have a Gregg Williams to hide their deficiencies.

I'm not saying I won't take an upgrade, because I will. And I expect there might already be an upgrade on our roster. I thought Martez Wilson had a good game last night. But it's a complicated scheme, and I would rather have a player in there that knows where to be than someone who can make the big hit, but does it out of position.
