Match Up Titans postgame presser: Derrick Henry “Saints were the better team” (2 Viewers)

Exactly. They want to keep him as fresh as possible for a playoff push.
They don't play him on long down & distance plays tho. After giving up a few runs, the Saints committed to stopping him.

Tannehill and other skill position players failed to make N.O. pay for that commitment. So the Saints D kept him off the field as much as snap mgmt imo.

I contend that the 1st few weeks of the season are effectively extended pre-season games. Teams are still figuring things out. It's very obvious they wanted to feature Tajae Spears in this game, and it just didn't work out. Which is funny because all we heard about during pre-season was how the Saints missed out on Tajae after his highlight reel plays during presesasonand he did absolutely NOTHING against us. Not a single juke spin, exciting run or anything.
Spears can ball and you can see that. Had us smoked on a pass but QB missed the throw. That being said he didn’t ball against us because our defense is actually really really good and has a chance to be special. Bet Spears and Henry ball out rest of the year though.

If you look at his opening game carries in the last 5 years, there was only 1 year where he got monster number of carries right out of the gates and he got injured the following year.

They weren't going to run him into the ground right out of the gates especially since he's getting older. He's been averaging 17 carries in opening games since 2018 outside of the 2020 season where he got 31 against Denver. That tells you that it's an outlier for him to carry the load that early on in the season.

They'll be selective with when they want him to carry the load and I can see why they really didn't want to give him a heavy load against a team outside of their conference.
Actually, 2018 was the outlier when he only carried 10 times against the Dolphins. Since then he has averaged 22 carries. 2020 he had 31, 2021 he only had 17 but were far behind early and abandoned the run, 2022 he had 21. He is the real deal. He also is in the last year of his contract and they were reportedly trying to deal him in the offseason. Not sure they care if they overuse him. Great for us though as they put the ball in Tannehill's hands and he proved he cannot carry the team against a good defense.

2018 was the year he started to break out and was sharing carries with Dion Lewis.

Even if you take 2018 out, outside of the 2020 season, he averages 19 carries. So not that far off of his 15 carries. Either way, I don't think they would run him that much more yesterday even if it's in an ideal scenario for them.

I was shocked how bad Tannehill was. A lot of it was our defense but the dude was turrible. Regressing big time. We dropped 2 INTs. It should have been 5.
