I intrepreted the scenario to be that traffic stopped. Gates came down. He was stuck. Ran over by a train 29s later. He is dead.

That's why I never stop on a train track. I don't care if the gate comes down on my car. If I can see that I'm not going to be able to clear the train track, I just stop where I'm at. I literally wait until the car ahead of me is at least a car length over the tracks before I proceed.

P.S. I lived in Bastrop for many years where you couldn't go anywhere without crossing train tracks. You wouldn't believe how many people were killed by trains in Morehouse Parish.
