Trevor Penning (1 Viewer)

I think this is yet another sign that the team has thrown in the proverbial towel on him. He's cooked, and this is actually one personnel move they've made that I agree with. The kid can't play.
I agree. Our tackle eligible guy was always that "sixth" lineman, i.e. the next best guy....whether it was Strief, or Clapp, Hurst, etc. Pretty damning that they don't trust Penning in that role. I know he was playing it right after he got demoted....

Probably so but I can see Peat being moved / released and TP moved to guard , they should go with Peat at LT and TP at LG once the season is mathematically over so they know what they have

We have made mistakes on both sides of the line drafting, keeping wrong players and letting good ones leave

If he plays too high and has bad pad level at tackle I don't really see how that translates to him succeeding at guard. He's a tall dude. I just don't see that transition working out.

There are only three guards in the NFL listed over 6'6" (our boy Andrus Peat is one of them). Penning is 6'7"

Exactly.
And the story from DA, and the reporting from Underhill, is he was being benched because of his run blocking.
Not what we want from OG.

After struggling bad in week one vs the pass rush, he kinda got a little better each week as a pass blocker.

The whole thing is weird.
Maybe he's enjoying NOLA too much.
Maybe he doesn't work well with others.
Maybe he just can't pick up the nuances of the position.

I'm not ready to call Penning a bust. The whole story on him was that he was raw coming out of college but had the physical tools and the attitude/desire part down. He was out for the majority of last year. This year our staff needed a scapegoat for the poor line play early and despite looking improved week on week as a starter they decided to make it the guy that's basically a 2nd year rookie. If he's bad next year under the same staff, I'll be worried but still wonder what he can do with better coaching. If he's bad next year under a different staff then that's another story.

The entire line has largely been bad at run blocking this season, and whilst pass pro has improved it's not amazing either (though our QB doesn't necessarily make it easy at times).

They cut his balls off. Either change the scheme and let him be the nasty enforcer player he was coming into the NFL, or switch him to DL and put him in attack mode with the mean streak that he has. Penning/Bresee on the interior of the D-line could be a nasty duo.
You sir possess an excellent football mind.

I’d start him the rest of the season, this year is a wash anyway.

Hopefully next year, with new coaches all around, he can solidify his position.

I'm not gonna say I've given up on him, but he's got an awwwful lot to prove.
