Two weeks into his first NFL training camp, Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler has done some of his best work on the run.

The rookie fifth-round draft pick looks as comfortable rolling out and throwing on the move as he does in the pocket.

“Love it,” Rattler said with a big smile when asked if he likes getting out on the move in this offense. “That’s one of my favorite parts.

“You know, if you can get out of that pocket, get on the move, I think that's super beneficial. You’ve just got more options, you can tuck it and run, you’ve got usually three levels (to throw into), and then you’ve always got a chance to run it yourself.”

Obviously it’s way too early to start overhyping Rattler before he has even played his first preseason game. But the 6-foot, 211-pounder has strung together his best stretch of practices over the past three days – including an impressive 15-of-19 performance on Monday when his workload increased while fellow backup Jake Haener had the day off for a scheduled skin cancer procedure. ...

Here is an article from NOF's Brandon Thomas...

Rattler sure throws a pretty pass. But more importantly (from the video clips I saw) the placement of the football is where his receiver can make the catch while making life tough for the defender to make a play on the ball. That's a great combination to have as a QB. :9:

1st round talent.... Passed over for silly reasons... He's going to look good/great in pre-season.... Only question is - Will DA make him #2 - or be loyal to JH out of some sense of seniority. And that's no knock on JH either... he's going to be a solid backup in the NFL IMO - He's just not as talented, nor does he have the potential be a top level QB1 in the NFL like SR does. This will be obvious when the games start because Spencer is a gamer - and is better when things break down - which is like 70% of being a top level NFL QB.... It's hardly ever clean and goes to plan. (Which is why your most successful NFL QBs are either guys that buy time and make off platform throws - Or guys that have elite timing and anticipation and get the ball out on time - Spencer can potentially do both)

Head coaches live or die when it comes to making these kinds of key decisions.
If he can't seed the talent in the right order, then he deserves to go. We just have to be careful not to assume that he's placing the wrong guy ahead of the other. There are lots of 'behind the scenes' reasons why one player gets the nod over another. But the proof will always be in the results.

QFT.

Plenty of reasons why the better long term prospect may not be the right guy, right now. Enough teams have rushed their QBs into the line of fire through necessity and seen it destroy them, to know timing and readiness matter more than any eagerness to see potential realised quickly.

I am really excited to have a young QB that can make off schedule throws. That, along with red zone performance, IMO is what separates solid NFL QBs from good/great NFL QBs. Almost all of the QBs in the NFL can pick a D apart if they have time to sit in the pocket. The key is what can you do what things break down. And Rattler has the arm to make some throws that even Carr, who has a good arm, can't make.

As far as who is #2, I don't think it really matters much at this point. Carr is starting unless or until he gets hurt. If that happens, I could see some sense in putting in Haener to allow Rattler the full year to get ready without getting killed as a rookie. Then again, if Rattler shows to know the offense better, then maybe he ends up the guy to step in for Carr.

I’m excited to see how much time he gets Saturday against the Cardinals. I hope he gets a whole half

So far I've been wrong about my initial assesment of Rattler. When drafted I thought he was just gonna be Dobbs 2.0. So far he's done his thing. Let's see how he reacts when the bullets fly.

Just the ability to pick up an NFL playbook can make an otherwise great physical talent have to spend a few years holding a clipboard. Thankfully both of our young guns seem to have a great aptitude for the game. I believe they have the smarts to play the QB position in the NFL. We'll see!

Meanwhile at San Francisco camp: Brock Purdy has thrown nine interceptions through 10 days of 49ers training camp. Imagine the buzz that would be going around if DC4 threw 9 picks.

If DC4 would get us into the playoffs every year, with a SB appearance to boot, then he could go “full Nathan Peterman” and throw 9 picks in one game for all I care
