But to your point- yeah its unreal to imagine a building doing exactly that, as designed, to alleviate the stresses of an earthquake.

My brother in law was stationed in Japan when a big quake hit. He was on the 57th floor of an apt building wheni want absolutely no part of that. At all. Ever.
