Vehicle plows into crowd on Bourbon St., with 14 fatalities (61 Viewers)

Did no one remind “them” that New Year’s Eve and the Sugar bowl were upcoming?

That brings up another whole issue with living in New Orleans. For the last 6 months or so everything has been centered around getting ready for the Super Bowl. They are spending untold amounts of money making things downtown look nice for the Super Bowl. i.e. repaving the streets downtown, fixing things in the Quarter, and putting in bike lanes downtown while the roads outside of the tourist areas continue to deteriorate and our pumping infrastructure continues to crumble. There has been a singular focus on getting ready for the Super Bowl while ignoring all the other issues. Apparently NYE and the Sugar Bowl got caught up in the same Super Bowl wash.
It's also possible that the process forced this time frame. Bids take time, then they can be challenged, then you need the weather to cooperate, and materials might or might not be available when you want etc.

Could be absolute idiocy. Could also be very valid reasons but the human mind doesn't like to find a reason when it already has an explanation memorized.

Maybe, but the explanation given (I think by the Mayor or maybe the Police Chief) was that they were being worked on to get them ready for the Super Bowl. It sounded like they had not worked correctly for awhile, or were at least difficult to get up and down, and they were now fixing them in preparation for the Super Bowl. But it's hard to know if they were actually functional or not when they took them down for maintenance.

Toxic masculinity. This ideal that the only emotion men should feel is Anger, or that having feelings makes you unmasculine. We repress emotion instead of learning how to feel emotion and it's completely unhealthy and destructive.
I wonder to what degree this exists in other countries? What would it be like if dudes could openly express themselves without fear of not being macho enough? Men in America are supposed to be the strong silent type, a nerd, or a bro's bro. I guess I'm strong and silent but I mean, I like Star Wars and the opening of "Up" gets me feelin some type of way. I like football so that's macho I guess but when I hear John Lennon sing "Mother" I can't help but tear up. I don't sit around squalling but I get emotional. How are you supposed to get through life trying to be a robot?

Maybe it comes down to how comfortable you are in your own skin. Who knows. All I know is this dude was troubled to say the least. For the life of me I'll never understand why someone would want to take out a bunch of innocent people before opting out. If that's what this even was. Could be he was radicalized and believed in what he was doing. Trying to rationalize the irrational is tough.

Oh it definitely exists in other countries too and especially in the older generations here

What I’ve observed with my younger colleagues—especially after their first parental leave—is that even the traditionally "strong, silent types" undergo noticeable changes. Spending a year caring for a 1-year-old (and possibly older children) seems to make them more open, social, and empathetic. They become better listeners and far more patient, qualities that benefit both their personal lives and their professional roles.

Companies recognize these positive changes, which is why there’s often a strong expectation for new fathers to take that year of leave once the mother’s leave ends. It’s not just about sharing responsibilities at home; it’s also about fostering skills that improve workplace dynamics and leadership.

Basically the city has not been doing any of the usual pre-Super Bowl prep that any normal city would be doing in the 3-4 years leading up to the game because we have an absentee mayor. Once Landry won he got together with Cantrell and they agreed to hand all the preparations over to Michael Hecht with GNO Inc, who has been spearheading all the various road and other projects - trying to fit 5 years of work into less than 1. This is just another example.

It's an evolutionary male trait. You have to remember where we come from.

It was a project to replace many or all of them. Chances are some of them worked to various degrees and some did not. We can probably assume the Bourbon ones did not since a police vehicle was parked in the intersection, but it's kind of immaterial at this point.

So do you let those around you see your emotions if, for example, Mother came on? I do, and I'll explain to them why certain memories can move me to tears or laughter. Mike & the Mechanics' In the Living Years will have me bawling like a baby reminding me very pointedly of my father's death in 1984. If that show of emotion bothered a woman I was dating then we would no longer be dating.

The trick I've learned is to recognize the emotion and determine if it's an appropriate place to deal with it. If not, I put a mental pin in it to circle back and process the emotion rather than avoid it.

Sometimes, the little child in me just wants to be heard. It's referred to as reparenting in come circles. If you were raised in an environment where you were not allowed to have or process negative emotions like anger or sad it can be a triggering event that overwhelms.

Bro, I got a little weepy when Tom Hanks lost “Wilson” in Castaway and my wife teases me about it to this day, but not in a mean way. I never know when something is going to get to me but when it does, it just does and so what. We’re too hard on each other in society from so many different angles. We place unrealistic expectations on each other that we can’t achieve ourselves; yet, we expect other people to. We all have our biases and selfish desires, and we have to be intentional about accepting each other on a daily basis.

Many of us are fortunate to have enough emotional intelligence and self control to never do anything like this; but there are also many of us who lack those qualities and this tragedy is yet another horrific example of the results.

You can witness the full spectrum of emotions men are capable of over on the SSF.
