We need to move on from Andrus Peat (1 Viewer)

I was never after fan after I saw him play that first year. Wasn't he a top-20 pick?
His first year (and probably into his second) I seem to remember we moved him all over the line. He wasn't in great NFL football shape, either. IMO, the pick looked like a reactionary pick as if they expected a different player to be available but wasn't. So, I can see why he had a lot to overcome to live up to #13 pick status, but I'd argue he has really paid off even with his injury history.

First, you know better than to grade out an Olineman on their first season. And once Peat settled in on the left side of the line he's been steady both guard and tackle. His flexibility has bailed us out many, many times due to injuries. Just this past season with Penning he stepped up once again this late in his career. I put him in the "not stellar, but very underappreciated" category. ;)

And you need to let that early baggage go. If Penning doesn't come around, that will be a quintessential "blown pick." Peat, not at all, IMO. ✌️

Have you ever played football? That is common.
I don't need to have played football to see that a play where the RB was tackled as soon as he took the handoff was a bust by someone.

Clown me if you want to...but at the end of the day, the play didn't work and the unblocked guy was the reason why.

If it was setup to have the end unblocked its sheetty play design especially given the absolute absence of an attempted trap scheme, and if the tackle was supposed to block the DE he failed...long story short, someone screwed up and none of us know for absolute sure where the failure was. So there

Without going through 10 pages, we need to re-sign Peat.

I say that as someone who hated his extension deal and thinks he's been one of the biggest wastes of money of the last five years.

But what's done is done. We need him at LT, and he played well there. We can't go into this season with a rookie at LT (assuming we even draft one), Penning, and nobody.

That's where I am as well...Peat needs to be resigned...but Peat also now knows his value at LT and it probably exceeds what we're willing to pay

That's on Carr and Pete for not recognizing the splits and adjusting the play or calling out assignments the way Brees made sure the oline knew their adjustments. Typically your ends aren't supposed crash down unless they are pinching, there was nothing to keep them honest on this play. So likely they had a pinch called on defense, Carr didn't recognize it.

It wasn't quite as soon as he took the hand off to be fair.

But imagine this play with 3 different variations:
- Variation 1 - run it from a two back set, I formation and the up back gets the ball, the RB fakes a route to the left flat, holding the left EMLOS - it hits much quicker so the edge players never get a chance to impact the play and the one on the backside you've occupied by stressing his responsibilities
- Variation 2 - Rather than having a two WR set on the left, have a split set and motion the WR on the right and time the snap to when he passes the LG which would better occupy the backside edge player, or an orbit motion with a fake to threaten his outside contain responsibilities
- Variation 3 - rather than trapping the 3T on the right, down block him and trap the EMLOS on the right meaning that rather than this being an A gap run, it becomes a wider, C gap run, which creates more distance between the backside EMLOS and the designated hole

Traps are great plays but they can be very hit and miss - hit it and it's awesome, miss it and it looks dodgy. But they are also quick hitting plays and trying to run a trap right up the middle from a depth of 7 yards is difficult with the timing of the play, so it needs something more to make it work in my opinion.

Just read that Peat was actually the 5th best run blocking tackle in the league last year. Didn’t see that coming

I know it’s a hard concept for some fans but a play can be a good design and everyone do what they’re supposed to do it and still not work. Sometimes the defense just makes a play or a unique set of circumstances leads to it not working that specific time. Failure is not always someone’s fault.

And sometimes QBs can recognize that the play called will get stuffed based on the alignment of the defense and adjust accordingly.

100% agree. When watching live sports with a crowd I often end up reminding someone that the other team gets paid to play too, hell sometimes I even have to remind myself that.
