I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. I grew up in the late 60's, 70's and the 80's, when rock n roll was it. Nowadays, what they call rock is not. All bands sound the same. When I grew up, you could turn on the radio, and you could tell a band after the first 3 notes. Now, every band sounds the same.

Styx
Foreigner
Journey
Bad Company
Lynyrd Skynryd
Queen
Ted Nugent
Eagles
Scorpions
Black Crowes
Def Leopard
Skid Rowe
Black Sabbath (ozzy and Dio)
Queens Ryche
Poison
Winger
Blue Oyster Cult
ZZ Top
Tommy Shaw
Damn Yankees
Night Ranger
38 Special
Survivor
Motley Crue
Kiss
Peter Frampton

The list goes on and on.

Now, my Question. What is the greatest rock song of all time?

I can name a bunch, but not by category.

Heavy Metal, Rock N Roll and so on. Just, the best rock song of all time.

Strangle hold (nugent)
Free for all (nugent)
Blue Collar Man (styx)
Renegade (styx)
Free Bird
Mr Breeze
Ballad of curtis lowe
Sweet Home Alabama
Fat Bottom Girls
Faithfully
Looks that Kill
Show Me The Way
Rev On the Red Line
Juke Box Hero
18 and Life
Pour Some Sugar On Me
Can't get enough of your love
Bad Company
Seagull
Every Rose Has It's Thorn
Something to believe in

I could go on and on with all these great bands and the music they had. Still, I want to hear from ya'll. What is the greatest song of all time when it comes to a rock song?

To me, as far as a rock song, it has to come down to a contest of Stranglehold; Renegade; Blue Collar Man; Free for all; 18 and Life; Gimme Three Steps; Free Bird

Too much Lynyrd Skynryd.
What about Led Zeppelin and "Stairway to Heaven"?

Impossible to answer. But Maiden deserves a little love.

Iron Maiden: Revelations / Aces High / Wasted Years.

I could go on forever.

All Along the Watchtower--Hendrix version
Gimme Shelter--Rolling Stones
Don't fear the Reaper--Blue Oyster Cult

School's Out .. Alice Cooper, lots of the artist mentioned took things from the shock rock guru

I think my parents used to say that to me when I was listening to Zeppelin.

As you can see, there is, nor will there ever be, consensus on the "greatest" rock and roll song ever. For me, though, it almost had to be Stairway to Heaven because the song epitomized the entire concept of "progressive rock". It also was the quintessential song by the what I consider the greatest rock band of all time (and many would agree with that - of course, many would not :)).

But even Zeppelin themselves considered Kashmir to be their greatest song (and I find it hard to argue with that as well).

But that just shows what is so great about music. It's all good.
