The moves that the Saints front office made last offseason were to give the team every resource necessary to win the division, and even potentially win a Super Bowl. Sadly the team fell short, and there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

So moving into 2024 the team needs to take inventory of their talent, and make the changes necessary in order to give the team the best chance to win, and give the fans a reason not to boo the team at home games. But what are those changes? What positions can the team feel good about?

Leaving the coaching staff out of this, what positions does the team need to make improvements to?

Obviously situations change, players get cut, and that may cause changes to this question, but as of today (1/8/2024) where does the team need to make improvements?

The two top units to improve are OL and DL, anything else is lagniappe.

On OL we have current/potential openings at LT/LG/RT that need to be filled.

On the DL, we struggled to generate pressure more often than not.

We seem to be solid enough everywhere else if we can make improvements to those groups.

I see improvements need to be made along the oline except for at center, and perhaps right guard.

The oline (except for McCoy and at times Ruiz) has been a major bust. With their inability to block, Carr has struggled, and the running backs haven’t been able to do much damage.

Obviously you can’t swap out 3 starters in one offseason, but you can try to swap out a guy or two, and hope that causes the 3rd guy to improve his performance.

Safety if there's one with superstar potential. Howden looks like a keeper, but the starters are aging.

Due to the lack of health, mental acuity, and talent along the offensive line, I'm willing to give Marrone another year, but the team needs to invest via FA and draft better talent on the OL It showed that if Carr wasn't getting pummeled and had time, he was rather decent.

The ripple effects the OL/DLs have on the back ends are tangible.

After OL, I put ILB (not a rush OLB the team tries to pigeon hole into ILB ala Braun) and Safety as second and third priorities to improve the team via FA and draft.

We need LB help!

Demario Davis is getting up and age & I don't see Werner playing any better in the future than he did this year.

Head Coach definitely! Offensive coordinator definitely! Linebackers, offensive line especially at the tackle positions. Also, Hurst at left guard is a huge liability.

I'd say OL, DE, DT, TE, Slot WR, then S/LB. I don't see LB as a big need you have your staring WIL and MLB. At LB we need a SAM to play the 20% of the snaps or so they play and maybe some better depth behind our starters if Sewell takes too long to come back.

But, I think it he end next season will totally depend on upgrading the OL and pass rush. The OL needs a new LT, LG, and likely RT. On the DL, Breese is a keeper on the rise, Granderson is a solid player, and Cam can still flash and play the run. But the rest are at best just guys - Saunders, Kpassagnon, and Shepherd - or guys you just can't count on in Turner and Foskey.

Meh. Demario has at least two years of high level play left in him and Werner ranges from good to very good and he still has time to become consistently very good. We could use a SAM, but they play so few snaps I don't think it's a priority over OL or DL. And we could maybe use a depth upgrade at LB but I don't think that's a priority either.

I know you said leaving the coaching staff out but I just can’t ignore Marrone. Our OLine was single biggest regression from last year to this year. Without looking at stats I’m willingly to say every single lineman both starters and backups were worst. Except maybe Peat who played well at LT. How much is penning performance on Marrone? I’d say most of it which is why I’m holding out hope he bounces back under a new coach. Marrone has to go probably even more than PC… well… at least as much as PC lol. They both need to go.
