Who does zeppelin better

This new three-disc release from the 1999 show where Jimmy Page joined the Black Crowes at the Greek in LA is badass.

Cool, I'm waiting on the 6 LP box set, which has unfortunately been delayed for another month. I had tickets (5th row I think) for when they toured back in 2000, but the Denver show was one of the ones cancelled when Page hurt his back.

I've never been to the Greek in LA, but the Greek in Berkeley is awesome.

I've now gotten a chance to listen to the re-release, and it's definitely worth picking up, really good stuff. The additions from the initial version include the Black Crowes songs from those shows (there was a rights issue 25 yeas ago) plus a few more Zeppelin songs, including at least one from the truncated 2000 tour.

The whole story around this release is pretty cool, though. The Crowes had opened for Robert Plant ("Uncle Bob") in 1990 and then for Page/Plant in 1995, so they were familiar with each other. Then in 1999, Jimmy asked Chris and Rich Robinson to play a couple of songs with him for a Net Aid appearance (see links below).

This led to talks of doing a full show -- drummer Steve Gorman could bring the thunder like Bonham, and Page combining with the Crowes for a three guitar sound allowed for some songs to be played live as they were on the album for the first time -- and they quickly scheduled 6 dates, culminating with two shows at the Greek Theatre in LA.

Rehearsals were sounding so good that they started talking about recording the last two shows. Jimmy was initially not in favor, but was given the power to veto the release if he didn't like how it turned out, and then after the shows was onboard with releasing the live album.

However, the Black Crowes had been with American (formerly Def American), which was then bought by Sony/Columbia, who re-released their first four albums (with "bonus tracks") in 1998 and then released their fifth album in early 1999. By later that year the relationship was broken and the Crowes were free agents, but because Sony had just released all of their songs in the last couple of years, they were able to deny the Crowes from adding any of those songs on the Jimmy Page record, so it was limited to only Zeppelin songs and some blues covers included in the show (the re-release corrects this omission).

At the same time, record labels were contending to put this release out, but instead they chose an online company -- which pissed off the retailers, as it would only be available online (a second release, with the same songs but different track listing, was made available a few months later in stores).

The album was well received, though, and led to a full tour scheduled for late summer 2000 that would follow the release of the album in stores. They appeared on Conan in July (see below), the tour kicked off, and then they appeared on Leno in August (also below) with a blistering version of the Wanton Song when they were 11 dates into a 55 date tour.

Then, like literally the next day after they were on Leno, it was announced the tour was not just postponed but cancelled, allegedly due to a back condition that was making it too painful for Jimmy to continue the tour. I had fifth row tickets to the aborted Denver show, which was only about ten days away at that point -- huge bummer.

Anyway, fast forward to 2019, at which point the Crowes were broken up, and the drummer, Steve Gorman, released a memoir in which he claims there was more to the story. According to Gorman, the real reason that Page dropped out was that he had approached Rich Robinson about contributing on the next Black Crowes album, but that Robinson wasn't interested, and that Page was so insulted that he decided it wasn't worth the back issues he was dealing with to continue. Page hasn't commented to confirm this, but also hasn't denied it -- either way it was a sour end to what had been a fun collaboration.
