Silly post, but every time I hear any of the Mannings talk, especially Peyton and Eli they don't have a New Orleans accent. Is it just me or what ??

well being that archie is not from new orleans i dont really expect him to have an new orleans accent then the two kids just went to highschool in new olreans after highschool they left when u spend a long enough time away from ur first accent u start to loose it just a tad so i wont expect none of them to have one

Ohhh......I thought they've lived here their whole life. Especially the kids.

Oh yeah.....no doubt. But def. do not sound like they've lived in New Orleans their whole life.

It more then likely has to do with his family not originally being from the New Orleans area, most of his family is from Mississippi, so i'm sure growing up and on a regular basis the people around him talked a little more country(like Archie), plus the fact that he went to Newman which is considered a very upper class school and generally that New Orleans accent isn't really going to be there.

The thing about Eli and Payton to me is their accent isn't New Orleans but its also not as thick(Mississippi country) which explains the above situation to me....

I don't think so. Usually people have the accent of where they grew up and not just of their parents. I agree with the post- they don't have a New Orleans accent and it doesn't really make sense. Plus, I think they have more of a southern drawl than most newman students.

I never said it was just of their parents/family, although that's a big influence. Its a combination of family and friends that shape a person's accent, its all in the socialization process. It makes perfect sense to me the way they talk, their parents have a Mississippi accent but from them growing up in uptown New Orleans and attending Newman their accent is not going to be as much Mississippi, thus the way they sound. On the other hand they didn't have enough influence of the N.O accent for it to really be significant. I've actually thought about it in the past as I have interest in regional accents and things like this.

The kids did. Archie and Olivia were originally from Mississippi, but made NO their home after Archie was drafted here. Even when Archie moved around from team-to-team in his last 4 years or so, Olivia and the kids continued to stay in NO. Peyton, Eli and Cooper only left when it was time to go off to college. Their accents were well established by that time. All 3 boys were born in NO.

But children tend to pick up the accent of their parents to some extent and I expect that is why they sound kinda like their Dad.

Additionally, here is some exchange from the posters at the American Dialect Society, not official stuff, just interesting and on topic:

BTW, I grew up in St. Charles Parish and didn't leave S. La. until 6 years ago. But my parents were not originally from there and my accent is like my parents, not like the area. FWIW.

kids who are raised uptown and go to private school don't have accents.

We moved a lot when I was a kid. I picked up the local accents of Monroe, Yazoo City, Natchez, Baton Rouge, Baker and Vidalia along the way.

Then, in 9th grade, they desegregated the schools and that introduced a whole new set of accents and dialects.

Then, I became a military instructor and learned to talk like a damn Yankee.

Depending on who I talk to, I might sound like a hick from Mississippi or a bayou boy from Louisiana or one of my track team homeys or a Yankee newscaster from the Midwest.

It all depends on who you're talking to. A person's natural accent comes through only when they're totally relaxed and off-guard, like talking on the phone to a relative.

Otherwise, for public figures at least, accents and dialect are affectations.

Archie's family is from Drew, in the north part of the state, close to my mom's hometown. My dad was from the south-central part of Mississippi. Their dialects were completely different.

I was born and raised in Slidell, but when I joined the AF people didn't know I was from down there b/c I didn't have an accent. Everyone I went through MEPS did and most of my friends and family do, but I never really picked it up.

Wow, this is an interesting question and may explain why, though I very much respect the Manning family and sons (what is there not to respect?), I am not real fans of Peyton and Eli.

First, a caveat given for context: I am originally from New Orleans. My family on both sides has roots east of Esplanade. My mom grew up on Franklin and Gentilly Blvd. My dad once lived near Frenchman and St. Claude. I grew up in Gentilly and NO East when it was first developing. Then and now, much family in Metairie (and now in St. Tammany). Those who know how parochial the city is will understand the next comment: When I was growing up, I had limited contact with uptown (except for Saint and Buc games, and basketball games at De La Salle). I certainly knew a lot of kids going to high schools uptown, but I didn't then know anybody going to Newman.

I don't consider Peyton and Eli real, totally authentic, 100 percent Orleanians. I can't totally put my finger on it. Part of it is that the kids are part of the Uptown establishment and went to Newman (see above, and I understand and probably deserve the bashing from Uptowners and Newman grads).

Part of it is that the kids have names like Cooper and Peyton and Eli rather than Buddy or Skippy or Hap.

Part of it is the accent, which may have traces of Uptown but which is just so different from what you hear in the city (we will not hear Peyton tell the female sideline reporter after the game: "Darlin', when I threw that pass, I just said, 'Oh my Gawd!'").

Part of it is the college choices and the feeling that LSU was never a serious option for the boys. Cooper and Eli went to Ole Miss, a decision totally understandable given that mother and father attended Ole Miss (and a popular choice of Uptown kids). But Peyton's Tennessee choice--not LSU, not even Ole Miss, but another SEC school--rankles still.

In summary, the Manning kids, especially Peyton, are from New Orleans but in terms of culture are not totally part of New Orleans. Indeed, in terms of culture, they probably are a tad more from Mississippi--in speech, in manner, in outlook--than from New Orleans. And the reason is Archie and Olivia are from Mississippi, and the family's roots are there.

Let me quickly add that this is not a criticism of the family. Archie and Olivia seem very committed to the city and have contributed greatly to many worthy causes over the decades. They have obviously done a super job of raising children who seem like high quality human beings. And I will probably be pulling for Peyton tomorrow--though not as much as my mother who is a huge Peyton fan.
