Two words: Derek Peuges

So we all know that FS is one of if not our biggest need this offseason. If you don't then you don't watch Saints football enough or you've been drinking too much at the games. :hihi:

Anywho, I had a thought a while back that would kill two birds with one stone. By this I mean our FS issues and being handcuffed to re-sign Roby just for his return talent, wasting a roster spot for a WR who won't play WR.

And even sweeter, he's an SEC kid so you homers can be happy. :hihi:

Here's the plan: Trade down to the mid/late second round and select Derek Pegues out of Mississippi State. :9: Gain a late second round pick with the use of our #14 while getting our ballhawk. :9:

Some film:

With the late second rounder, we could pick up a RB if the FO feels it's neccesary, or go for a OLB. :9:

If he is as good as you think he is, he will probably be picked out of the crowd during the run up to the draft and may rise up a bit. Early 2nd round may or may not be high enough to get him. Let's hope that he is as good as you say, the Saints see it, the rest of the country only sort of recognizes it and we can trade back and pick him up along with an OLB with the extra pick we acquire.

imo, pegues is the most "sure thing" at fs in the draft.

ps- i want roby back, which leads to the debate should the nfl allow special team spots also? like kr and pr?

Here's to hoping. :9:

I dont think these guys are gonna go as high as we think they are...safeties usually go from 2nd to 4th round...and aside from Taylor Mays, I dont think we will see that many safeties going that high...we still havent gotten to the point in the offseason were players start to drop....and though its a need for next season, it could be a reach if we can get a top linebacker in the first and a free safety in the 4th (the round were they are known to go)....

I know I am in the minority...but I think we need a veteran FS and draft a DT. I like Ellis, but that's about it.....and stopping the run in the NFC south is going to be a big deal next year.

I see a young Ed Reed in Derek Pegues; he's a ballhawk, amazing ball skills, always in position, just everything you'd want in a cover safety. He tackles alright too, but at this point, all we can ask for is a safety who can cover. I like Pegues over William Moore.

I really like Pegues, but he got torched, and exposed against Jevan Sneads' OLE MISS REBELS. It was ugly. I was actually more interested in Pegues than Taylor Mays until that dreadful game against the REBELS.
Eventhough I'm from the Sipp, by no means am I a:homer:! Florida State 4ever.
His pick 6's and PR are a thing of beauty, mainly because of his keen field vision. That same keen vision didnt help in coverage. I'll pass on him.

I don't know. I am skeptical of any safety drafted in the 2nd round.

See Josh Bullocks and Roman Harper.

/End thread.

Safety isnt the biggest need on this defense...... go back and watch other great defensive teams and tell me what position on defense is the bigger need....

By the same token, If our potential starting safety goes down with an injury from returning kicks, we're twice as screwed. We don't have the depth to risk it.

You care to tell anyone who knows football that Ed Reed isn't ht biggest part of the Baltimore Ravens' Defense?

You care to explain how Brian Dawkins isn't in the Top 3 important players for the Eagles Defense?

Wanna ask Mike Tomlin and Bill Cowher how much of an impact Troy Polumalu has on the #1 Defense in the NFL?

Wanna ask the Colts how important "Ex-Defensive Player of the Year" Bob Sanders is to them?

I would even venture so far as to say the Cardinals wouldn't be where they are without Adrian Wilson.

A Safety is asked to both stop the run AND defend the pass. If they are great at BOTH, how can you say this isn't arguably the most important position on the field?

You ever watch Bob Sanders or Ed Reed play????

I want the Gues also. The guy is explosive back there. The good thing is that he is a senior who have played all four years at state and he's a ballhawk. He wants the ball when it is in the air. I watched this guy play and he covers the field really well.

He would complement Harper just fine. Wouldn't have to worry bout a safety for years to come. Speed is outstanding and can do punt returns. Just need to get in the weight room.:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::plus-un2:

The Gues for our new FS. This guy will make a huge difference in the secondary.
