This is a brilliant post and I agree with every single word of it.This is the only concern for me…
Over the course of a season, you will be presented with roughly 5 of these coin flip type games with an additional 1 or 2 in the playoffs, where an occurrence of luck is needed. These games typically boil down to one of four elements - a.) a ball bouncing your way, b.) an official making a close call in your opponent’s favor, c.) a long field goal being made or short field goal being missed, of d.) a literal coin toss in overtime.
The teams that make the playoffs win most of them and certainly the teams that have actual great seeding do.
We are off to an 0-2 start in this department, and it’s likely going to cost us one way or another at the end, whether it’s seeding, the division, or a playoff berth altogether.
It has been our problem for quite some time now…we just don’t know how to finish close games, and the proverbial football gods that tend to average these things out seem to have completely turned their backs on us long ago.
We can’t keep dropping these “games of luck” if we ever want to become a serious contender again.
Remember our championship season, where it kept feeling like we were a team of destiny and we were getting all the luck? That’s what championship seasons are made of. We need to figure out how to dig deeper and win these contests.
