I found this breakdown of the Saints player salaries, and I noticed some pretty weird numbers...

Guys like Jahri Evans, Ben Grubbs, and Broderick Bunkley have HUGE bumps in their base salaries next year. They all have base salaries of $700K this season, but next season they jump up to the likes of $3.7M for Bunkley, $7.2M for Evans, and $5.2M for Grubbs!!!!

Drew Brees' salary jumps from $3M to $9.75M next year!

Malcolm Jenkins gets a $1M increase next season, and Lance Moore's base salary jumps from $825K to $2.5M.

Colston goes from $1.2M to $4.5M next season as well.

It's no wonder we're looking at being $25M OVER the cap next year!!!

Will Smith moves from $825K to $9M, so it's no surprise there's talk of him being let go... and Vilma has an increase from $1.6M to $4.8M.

...and how in the H-E-double hockey sticks are we gonna pay Will Herring $1.5M to stick around next season?!?

Anyways... Take a look you guys, and let me know how you think we can make it through this without gutting our team!

New Orleans Saints - Salaries by Year

A lot cuts and restructures. You think anyone on defense is going to see all their money after this record breaking year. You got to be joking. You'll be surprise when Loomis does his magic and manipulates the cap again like he does every year.

Maybe it's me, but with all the bad this offseason, to the 0-4 start to finally winning some games, to knocking off the undefeated Falcons and giving a glimmer of playoff hope, I thought I would come here today and be happy reading all the positive stuff .........and the first thread at top is "were looking at cap hell"! Oh well, so much for 24 hours of positivity.

Since were keepimg it happy, maybe we will free up some cap space with Payton leaving for Dallas?

can someone tell me how much we will be over the cap if we cut will smith and sedrick ellis? or just how their salaries or worth, if will smith's is 9 mil and say sed is 5 mill that puts us only over 16 mil.

It's not as simple as cut this player, restructure that player, and let that player walk. Next year's salary cap will take into account numbers that we don't have to account for this year (like Brees' huge bump in salary). It also take into account pro-rated bonuses that would come due if we cut a player (Roman Harper). It doesn't take into dead money that we are carrying this year (Jon Stinchomb). It's hard to figure out what's going to happen without knowing how the Saints value the top of our roster. There are about 15 players that the team will have to make a decision on. The decision on each one will have a subsequent effect on the next one.

But if that answer doesn't suffice:
Will Smith will be cut. He is making $5.36 million this year but it jumps to a $14 million cap hit next year.

Sedric Ellis was a $7.3 million cap hit this year. He will not be asked back or brought back at a considerably lower number.

Scott Shanle was a $2.25 million cap hit this year. He will not be asked back as his replacement is already on the roster in Chamberlain.

Jonathan Vilma is due $6.5 million next year. He will not be asked back because his replacement is already on the roster.

Broderick Bunkley seems to be in the dog house, but cutting him will still count against the cap for $3.6 million (remaining pro-rated signing bonus) while keeping him will cost $4.7 million. The Saints will likely keep him because it will cost as much more to replace him with a player that's likely to be not as good. In other words, we're invested. They could treat it like a June 1 cut and spread the remaining bonus over the next 2 years. In that case it's only a $1.8 million cap hit in 2013

It will only cost the Saints $3.8 million to keep Malcolm Jenkins. He's not likely to go anywhere unless via trade.

Also, somewhat unrelated, the remaining amount of Stinchomb's signing bonus money that counted against our cap drops off this season freeing up about $3 million more in cap space. I don't know if we have any other dead money out there, but I do suspect we will carry over a couple million from this year's salary cap that we didn't spend.

EDIT: Stinchomb counts a whopping $4.85 million against the 2012 cap.

We pretty much had this same discussion not too long ago in this thread:

Best post of the season

based on this link we have a lot of ppl we can get rid of or reconstruct their contract.

IMO: Ellis, Rom Harper, Shanle, Herring, Will Smith, Devery are all gone.

Vilma and Chase's contracts may be reconstructed to cost less against the cap (done by Loomis magic i dont understand). then we will be under by the wave of Loomis magic pen and all will be well.

We lose 5 starters? That's not good

I don't get this post. Ellis and Shanle will be free agents that are probably not resigned. Devery will be a UFA as well, but I think Devery will get extended. Harper I see getting restructured. Cutting him outright would be needlessly wasteful against the cap. Herring and Will Smith are the only ones that have an upside to releasing (cap relief : player value).

Starter is relative.

Devery is not a key cog to the offense. If he walks, he walks. Assuming we adjust accordingly, we should be fine without him. Shanle isn't a starter anymore and has been a healthy scratch two weeks.

Will Smith, while a good player, is not a game changer anymore. Galette has had real success and not just on 3rd down duty. Assuming you draft a DE at some point as well, it just makes sense that Smith is gone at his salary. And I don't think we lose much if we adjust accordingly.

Herring is just a backup and expendable. Ellis will probably be back, just on a cheaper deal.

On that list, I don't buy that Harper goes anywhere. Maybe he restructures. But he's here next year.

Peter King wrote about our cap situation in his trash column this morning and Triplett tweeted it out... That's the reason I was thinking about it, and subsequently found the site with salaries on it. Sorry it's not all rainbows and lollipops, but this is the reality of the situation. and Payton's salary doesn't count against our cap space... duh.
