How did Merrit make the team when he didnt play in preseason?
Merritt had the advantage of being a serviceable player at a position that will have a great need for the first three weeks of the regular season. If he showed the coaches that he can be effective toting the rock while we wait for Kamara to return to action, then it would have been hard to send him packing without having another reliable RB waiting in the wings. Obviously they liked his abilities better than the RBs who didn't make the cut yesterday. This proves that there is just as much (if not more) evaluation from how a player performs in training camp as how well he may do in the preseason games.

Understanding the playbook is as big to a coach as having him break off a few big runs in some preseason games. If a guy is constantly out of position when running team drills, it's a good bet that his name won't be etched on the Final 53. Merritt must have shown that he is not only physically capable to handle the job, but that he also has a pretty good grasp of the playbook. Coaches love smart players as much as a physical specimen.

Shoutout to Max Garcia, I bet no one had anything to say about him all off season, and there he is!

In his post practice interview Allen said something like he has confidence in Taylor and they have a whole week before Game 1 to work at the position.
Don't see anyone else, plus what we saw of taylor in preseason was as an outside corner
