A couple of former Wisconsin Badgers huddled up this summer, with Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt sharing on Instagram that his younger brother T.J. Watt and New Orleans Saints linebacker Zack Baun joined him for a training session ahead of training camp.

Still don't understand the fit of Baun into our defense.

When we took him I thought he'd be an edge rusher in our system because that's what he does. I hate it when we take guys and play them out of position, or is a complete system misfit (Jason David). With Baun working out with the Watts maybe he'll be asked to rush more now? But I do understand the Badger connection between them.

It's super annoying. And given our defenses track record, you'd think we'd learn that we aren't the positional change gurus we must think we are.

Some good company to keep. The Badger cabal moving iron in the off season. I hope to see him on the field this season but something tells me he will end up elsewhere making a contributing effort.

Baun fits best as an outside pass rushing LB in a 3-4 front. I don’t see a fit with the Saints when they play mostly two LB’s on passing downs and he’s too small to play DE. Basically another Kikaha situation without the injuries.

He’s another LB that was probably taken in hopes to play him at SAM which is what Klein played when Anzalone was healthy.

If he can just play a solid role somewhere, itll help upgrade the defense and the depth

Payton mentioned he’d be playing Will this year and it threw me off but perhaps it’ll be as a passrushing WLB. We’ll have to see how it works out considering we drafted Werner to play SAM
Isn’t Werner slated at WILL as well? I remember reading that and I believe he said that in an interview as well.

Likely, not sure where I saw that Payton had him working at Sam but that potentially means that he and Baun will compete at Will and since we usually ask those guys to learn more than one position the loser will take the snaps at Sam in base which are few and far between.

I'll see if I can locate the article but otherwise I stand corrected.

Edit, Yep - Nick confirms both are competing for will and then the less impressive player (wont say loser) slides elsewhere

Picturing how the pieces will fit together at linebacker this year isn’t easy – yet. Unless there is a plan to switch the defensive scheme or philosophy, there will only be two linebackers on the field for most of the defensive snaps. With Demario Davis locking one of those down, that means there is only one other one up for grabs.

That spot isn’t guaranteed to go to Pete Werner or Baun. The Saints still think they might have something with Chase Hansen, who will also be competing for snaps. Positions aren’t guaranteed, either. The Sam and Will linebackers have some similar responsibilities in this defense, so if someone loses at one position, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch for them to play somewhere else.

Yeah with both of them learning the WILL, what does that do for Kwon who plays that same position?
