Zach THomas to cowboys

I was thinking - you know, sounds like ZT just wanted to play part-time on a team close to home while letting his teammates play most of the important roles in the winning process. You know what? We don't need that here. We need guys who want to play, want to be leaders, and want to be the reason we win.

Thomas will be the starter on opening day. Don't kid yourself or rationalize it's a good thing he's not a Saint. He got the same money and he's playing closer to home.

cruize, I know you know his sister. Do you have any insight as to what exactly we offered? Was it more years and dollars or was it the minimum with incentives (like NE)? And was the bottom line playing for hometown Texas? Was the city of NO post Katrina, not the Saints, a negative?

He had a secret meeting with the Cowboys before he met with the Saints. The Saints offered more. He went back to the Cowboys and they matched it. That was enough for him. Same money. A place he would rather play. No slight to the Saints.

That's pessimistic drivel. Why wouldn't any free agent want to sign with a championship-caliber team? What's with all the negativity all of a sudden? I don't care where the team is located. Look at Atlanta. Who would want to join that pathetic franchise?

Call it whatever you want... but this isn't the first time a player has turned down more money to go somewhere else. We were not a championship-caliber team last season... or are you still living in 2006?

Please remove the rose-colored glasses so that you can see clearer. Drew Brees is the biggest pickup we made, and had the Dolphins made a wiser decision Brees would be going into season 3 in miami.

Not pessimism... just realism.

Thanks. Well, I don't feel as bad. I mean, he used us, but that's the art of negotiation. Really he was going to the Cowboys no matter what.

Now our choices are:

1. resign Simoneau. this would be exciting, right!

2. sign a free agent in a very weak MLB group. Dan Morgan? no thanks

3. trade for Vilma. the popular choice on the board but what is his health and what do we have to give up. I'm warming up to the idea, but if it's more than a 4th rounder, I'd be upset.

4. go into the draft without one. definitely not this regime's MO. we want to draft the BPA. I'd be OK with it though. I think we could get a starting MLB in round 2 or 3, but not if we trade those picks away.

I didn't read any post here... but... I'm just glad he didn't go to the Patriots.

Add in that Texas has no state income tax and it's a better financial deal for him.

Once again this proves that N.O. isn't the most attractive spot for free agents no matter how much money we offer. :(

Time for plan B... whatever that is.

we dont konw what we offered him -- and to tell you the truth not picking the Pats means hometown was themost important -- face it -- if I was in the declining years of my career I would have gone to the Pats if the money was even close -- its always a super bowl contender

Zach has a much better build for a MLB than Vilma. Both have injury concerns but Vilma's microfracture will be very difficult to come back from. I wouldn't touch Vilma. It's worse than they think.

I'm with you. Its almost like buying a used car at a small corner lot. I'm glad we didn't sign him.

Thought I'd share a story about a typical Cowboy fan: The quotes aren't exact but you will get the point.

I was talking to my brother, a die hard Cowboy fan, earlier in the week. When I told him that Z. Thomas was visiting the Saints he said "Who would want Zach Thomas? He's old and injured...you gotta be desperate to want that guy." So, when I inform him that Thomas was to meet with the Cowboys he goes: "Nah, we don't want that guy. He won't make it here. I'll be really surprised if he even gets to visit. No star for him, we are the Cowboys." So, when I call him yesterday after I heard about the agreement, there was a long pause and then a euphoric "We got Zach baby!!!"

Cowboy fans drive me nuts.

Me too... actually, most anything Texas is like that to me. Growing up and going back to SW Louisiana, especially at my Mom's place just across the Sabine from TX, one has a chance to see the TX folks and their bravado. Nothing malicious in my spite, just plain old-fashioned regional discontent. I'm a big Razorback fan (except against LSU) so I should admit bias.
