So..the elephant in the room. Lost 1st game of the season= no playoffs this year. Anyone sees different?

I do, it's one damn game against a good football team. We lost from poor clock management, two missed FGs (which I'll take really, he was solid from everywhere under 50 and barely missed the last one), and yea some shoddy defense in the 4th quarter. A ticky-tack PI and one that shouldn't have been called didn't help. These things happen though, I think we'll be 500 after next week and go from there. There's no reason we can't be 3-1 going into the bye week and this board will have a wholly different opinion on everything.

I saw an improved defense for about 75% of that game, Breaux going down hurt us and yea one player shouldn't make that big of a difference but when that one player is your best corner and the d-line stops playing at halftime it will hurt.

I really feel like a big reason for the defenses struggles are that they're essentially playing with 10 men each drive. Byrd lines up so far away from the line of scrimmage that he's never in position to make a play on the ball.

Meanwhile Isa al Quddus made a nice INT against Seattle a little while ago, playing center field.

So the only way it'll improve is GAME ONE. BAM! Instantly a better defense. Total overhaul and ZERO resemblance to previous seasons?

Yeah, yeah. I get what you're saying. We've seen this whole song and dance before. And I even can see how "Just give it time" can become a mantra on repeat, which can last well into December and we're looking a team that's 4-9. Yeah. I totally get you. I totally do.

But when, if ever, we see that better defense, it won't transform overnight.

Not when your team has so many inexperienced players. Just have to see what happens next. Defense didn't look totally helpless today. It had moments. Fleeting and hard to remember after the fact, but they were there.

I'm not asking for better defense overnight. But, correct me if I'm wrong, 3 years is not overnight.

If our defense improved by just 2 teams in 3 years we would have won. Is that too much to ask?

I see where you are coming from, but the problem is, we are only going to incur more injuries as the year goes on. . .then who are we going to sign ? I called 8-8 I believe at the start of the year, but, that was a chance to steal one, but in typical fashion we played well, got some calls, but blew it due to the same old stuff including mismanaged time outs, running out of time in the end of games etc.

My fear is it just gets worse long before it gets better, thers is just something missing in the mentality of this defense, no aggression, no heart, no sacks, no ints, no personal fouls even. It's just a going through the motions effort from what I see. Maybe it is having Drew that just leads them to believe that he will win it for them somehow. Hard to put a finger on it. . . . I still see win one, lose one, win one lose one.

What do you expect? Do you expect BAM! Good defense? Like one season we're terrible, the next we're solid? No kinks? No blown coverage, missed tackles leading to long touchdown runs along the way?

Basically, is there a reality you can imagine where the road to us finally not being so awful on defense...includes games like today?

Gotta disagree here. Today, the defense looked, and was, the same level of bottom-feeding putridness it has been for 2+ years. So bad that the Raiders didn't even think twice about going for (and easily completing) a two point conversion instead of an xp.

This just looked the exact same today with no improvement.
But God help me, I'll be back next week, hoping for something better. It's like being in DV relationship.

Because we have [ - please don't insult other members - mod edit] posting that our defense is better than raman noodles stopping an avalanche.

Our defense is the worst spofrting group of people in any sport, at any level, at any point in history. Any kindergarten class anywhere would put up a better fight against Navy Seals than our defense would against wet paper.

Yeah, I'll bite. Not a single team gave up more points, so far, than us.

I don't expect us in 1 year to be the Seahawks or Titans on D.

But if we were even just the 28th best D we would have won. If we were even the 30th best D we would have won.

So while no, I don't expect us to turn it totally around in 1 year, I do expect progress. To be better than at least 1 team defensively.

This is fair.

And last year I remember a lot of points coming off of pick 6s, fumble returns, or other TOs. Not a lot of that today.

If it was the same players with the same coaches, I'd be right with you. Allen is in the driver's seat and we have what, 6 new starters out of 11? I'm a bit frustrated, but I fully expected this to be rough early on.

The key will be...are we making the same mistakes, being beaten the same ways several games in? This season probably isn't going to amount to much but another middle of the road draft pick. But we know our offense hasn't missed a step.

Frankly, I think it's even better. Michael Thomas is the real deal.

I am very optimistic about this team. People are forgetting that we just played a top team in the AFC, and they are on the rise, while we are still finding our way. Our defense looked solid except for a freak play, and the final drive. Besides that, they were fine. In time, we should be solid for the entire game. Remember, this is a marathon and not a sprint. There is so much to be hopeful for.

i knew we were going to lose it as soon as Lutz missed that 50 yarder. 4-12 is what I predicted and that's what I'm sticking with.
I left the house after the Raiders tied it up for the first time late and went to my daughters fastpitch game. I saw some defense there and didn't have to watch the wheels fall off like I knew they would.
