What is Payton up to? (1 Viewer)

The prospect of Brees and Hill splitting time at QB looks dayum good I tell ya! Expect that as a grooming process for Hill during Brees' farewell season. Hill can prove it when it matters most- 2020 season

If we are smart, we make him the most dynamic hybrid TE/WR in the entire NFL.

I believe he has the opportunity to catch 70-80 passes for 1,100-1,200 yards per season.

Hopefully Payton has enough sense to see this.

Pretty well thought out post. I really could not poke any holes in your position. There are so many variables that NO one in this forum could ever envision and put together as a singular plan by Payton and co., to move this team into the future, that I would say your view is as good as any other, I have read. And I have read 10’s of such.
He HAS been racking is brain ?

That's what we might want but that doesn't seem to be what he wants. He wants to be a QB and when he's a FA he'll go where that opportunity is best.

So, what is Sean Payton thinking, Why would he hype a player he wants to resign? I can think of one very good reason.

Brees is coming back and for how long is an open question, 1,2,3 years? Even 2 is a long time for Taysom to be patient.

So, I think Payton feels he has to convince Tayson the opportunity is real to keep him from pursuing another team.

Consider if Payton had instead downplayed Taysom's potential to be a franchise QB to keep his price tag reasonable. We'd have the JOAT for one more year and then Free Agent Tayson would be gone.

My uninformed guess is that they want to keep Tayson in the fold with a multiyear fair value contract and they can only do that if Taysom believes he is the heir apparent and thinks he is getting paid what he is worth in the marketplace. So hype him as the future, let the market decide his value and sign him for three years.
Brees will not sign any deal that locks him into more than 1 year. It may go 2-3 for cap purposes but will have another void clause after this year.

The point I was making is that Taysom does not know how long he would have to wait behind Brees so Payton needs to convince Taysom it will be worth his while to hang around. He does that with a fair contract and assurances he is next in line.

The argument has been raised that Payton is hyper hyping Taysom to grab a first round pick and that Payton does not really think Taysom is the next Saint's QB.

I was offering an alternative argument to explain the hyping.

If Brees has next year in him, it’s the last. I feel that is almost guaranteed. So this year you try to get Hill at what the market value sets at For one year. Then you sign him to starter contract for about three years. Good money but not elite for say a three year deal. Then if he pans out as an elite QB, you restructure that into an elite but team friendly contract. At his age it will make sense for him to restructure instead of trying to make it to free agency. Unless he steps in to full time starting role this year, I don’t think anyone is going to try and out bid us next year.

I'm unsure if that is how it works. I thought a tender offer could and most likely would be for multiple years. For example. The Raiders could offer Taysom 3 years for $40M, $15M guaranteed and front load the first year at $15M to put the saints in a cap bind.

Am I wrong about this? Are all the offers for a tendered RFA limited to one year?

If the Saints get a 1st rounder for Hill, then great. If the Saints end up keeping Hill because of the 1st round tender and having to pay Hill $4.5-5 million then great, that's about what they think he should be paid.

Load management.

In the past the belief was you cant have Taysom at qb2 because he does so much other stuff that puts him in jeopardy. Well this past season showed you gotta get him on the field with the ball in his hands because he has been a playmaker in limited reps. Keep in mind when Taysom is at qb with Drew on the field, that's load management for Drew he's doing nothing out wide but taking a breather. Increase Taysoms usage at QB to take advantage of his ability now while preserving Drew for the long haul of the season. It's been working well as an "experiment" and now it's time to go full throttled. I believe a lot of us wished we had seen more switch up looks between Drew and Taysom this past past season.

I believe it’s to drive Taysom’s value up. I don’t think he’s the future at QB because too many people in the media claim he will be. They’re usually wrong on these type of things.
Payton and Taysom's agent will not be able to drive his perceived value as a QB up enough for someone to give us a 1st round pick for him... but it cost nothing to try.
That's all... nothing to see here. Never was anything to see.

That would work for one year and then he would leave as a free agent. You can't force him to play a position he doesn't want to play beyond this season.

They could do that. Of course Taysom has to sign it. He thinks he's a starting QB and he'd be signing a multi-year contract for below market value in that case. I think if you're Taysom you want to be on one year deals if you aren't getting starting QB market value. So when your value is shown you're free to sign. Basically what Teddy has done. If Teddy signed that 2 year 11 mil deal with the Dolphins last year he'd be stuck until next year.
