COVID-19 Outbreak Information Updates (Reboot) [over 150.000,000 US cases (est.), 6,422,520 US hospitilizations, 1,148,691 US deaths.] (2 Viewers)

The need to test for some is based on employment and/or school rules and procedures.

The way the number of cases are going up there will be a shortage of tests in a few days.

I feel like everyone is getting Omicron now. I have numerous family and friends who currently have it or are telling me they have a scratchy throat and runny nose. Most are out of take home tests and just dont want to wait in endless lines at one of the two testing facilities in the area, and most drug stores are also 2-3 days deep on test appointments. At this point I really don't see the need to test based on how much lesser the disease is in contrast to previous variants. This is hopefully what pushes us to herd immunity. By only concern at this point is just hoping that Omicron doesn't cause long covid issues.

Yeah I think it depends on each person’s situation. If you need a lab test for work protocols or travel or whatnot, go get it.

I don’t need it - I will stay home and isolate (my kids had it before Christmas). Depending on my symptoms I’ll figure out when I will start testing again. I don’t need to wait hours in line for a lab test.

Friend of mine who works in car sales said he has it and pretty much the entire sales staff all have it. Toyotathon became the Omicronathon

It feels like this is where we thought we would be in March 2020, where it was flying around everywhere, literally everyone was going to be exposed, and almost everyone was going to catch it.

It took 2 years, but I think this is now the full scope of what we feared. This is the endgame…hopefully.

But I just want to remind everyone - since Omicron is the variant that has taken over the world, the next variant will almost certainly be a variant of omicron, and will likely carry much of its transmissibility mutations, since those will continue to be favorably selected for for the near future.

If we don’t get herd immunity out of this wave and the next variant keeps omicron’s transmissibility but picks up some more virulent traits, we could reach disaster of untold proportion.

Before someone comes along and says “viruses always mutate to be less virulent,” that’s absolutely not a given for the next variant. Yes, over great periods of time, viruses tend towards less severity. But in the very short term, there’s absolutely no guarantee that the next variant is the deadliest one we’ve seen yet.

We have to hope for herd immunity now.

After work today I had a runny nose and it has been a few days since I took a home test (we recently refreshed supplies).

And dang it; I’m positive. Wife still negative but probably won’t last. I have a runny nose but otherwise feel fine.
Just found out, it wasn't likely from the NYE activities (still possible though), but since the husband got it first, they think it's from when he went to the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's day. He's fully vaccinated, not boosted. Was planning on getting his booster soon.

She doesn't sound too awful. Just raspy and congested. She took a nap, but has some energy. In any case, I pushed back her return flight by like a week, so she's clear of the virus, and also doesn't fly feeling crappy.

Part of me thinks she did this just to get a longer vacation... j.k.

Maybe. The flu is also going around, and some other regular cold. I hear you though, probably less of a priority to get tested (when we're crushing record cases), but if anyone sick starts having breathing issues, just run to the hospital. At this point even trying to get an early infusion of monoclonal antibodies is a crap shoot. Most places have limited it to only one brand that's still effective, and they are having to ration it.

Got people at work now sick with covid at home, and others who tested negative, still at work, but coughing, and sounding like crap.

I'm glad my boss is pretty easy about that stuff. Yeah, we need to get stuff done, but if we're sick, use your sick days, or just stay home anyway. He flat out told the engineers (salary) in our group, he doesn't care if we're out of sick days, if you're too sick, just stay home. Hourly.. sorry. So, it drives me nuts when I see people in other departments think they're either so freaking important, or so tough, to come to work with a cold. Obviously they worked this out with their bosses, who are business whores, but man.. read the room. Stay home.

One guy, who's now in my management chain, 3 levels up, got covid again. He had it over the summer, and now got it again. He's fully vaccinated. Not sure if he ever got a booster, since he 'naturally' got boosted. I think this second go around has been mild for him, from what I hear. He's either very late 60's or early 70's.

Just remember, Omicron was a variant mutation of Beta, if I recall correctly. And all while Delta was the dominant strain. This isn't something easily predicted.

To add, this is from Nextstrain. I took out the original covid, and some less interesting variants to show this a bit clearer. there are two Omicron's. I have no idea of the differences, because I haven't spend any time digging into it yet.

No home tests on sale on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish ... been out since around December 19th or so leading into Christmas.

You might have meant shortage of the testing material hospitals and testing sites use. Yeah, I could see that, too.

My nine year old is running a fever and has an achy body today. We haven't been anywhere within the last few days that she should have been exposed to anything. I don't know where it would have come from, but I'm think perhaps flu for her. She did the flu vaccine earlier this year, but I know it has poor coverage. She did get Covid in October when I brought it home from a work meeting. She had her second Covid jab one week ago, so isn't at full immunity yet for that. I guess who knows at this point. She has some Incredible Hulk heeling powers, so it's possible she'll feel better in the morning, but we are going to hold her back from school.

I hope she recovers like the Hulk.
