R.I.P. Val Kilmer (1 Viewer)

We all have our favorite genres and such, but for me, The Doors was "peak Kilmer." He basically became Jim Morrison in that one.

At some point a few years after the movie released, I saw a picture of Jim Morrison and I realized that since I saw the movie the image I had in my head of Jim Morrison has changed to Val Kilmer, not Jim Morrison.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm sure many that saw the movie conjure Val when thinking of Jim.

IMO, Taps was Cruise's best performance.

Outside of that and Born on the 4th of July, he mostly just seems to be playing Tom Cruise as . . . Ethan Hunt, Pete Mitchell, Cole Trickle, Jerry McGuire, Cage, etc. He's in some really fun movies like Edge of Tomorrow, and the MI stuff but not really a great actor IMO because it seems that the vast majority of the roles he plays are made to fit his personality instead of him adjusting his personality to fit the role. That was even true in his early stuff like Risky Business, All the Right Moves, etc. He doesn't become the characters he plays, the characters become him.

Magnolia has entered the chat .. also, though ive never seen Tropic Thunder- i hear that he steals the show in that one .. to me it’s wild that you think his best was in Taps, which was literally the very first movie he ever did, outside of a blink-and-you-miss-it singular scene in Endless Love .

The thing you need to realize is that each actor brings a huge amount of him/herself to every role they play .. that’s 98% of actors.. if you are comparing him to the likes of Day-Lewis or Streep, the extremely rare actor that “gets lost” in their roles, wherein they are unrecognizable because they “become” the character so fully- well, good luck deeming anyone a good actor or actress if that’s the bar youre comparing against… There are many , many brilliant actors who are still recognizable in their roles, because these are human beings playing a part, not AI .. at least not yet .

What can I say, I have high standards.
