R.I.P. Val Kilmer (1 Viewer)

Man... I thought this was fake at first. This stings. So many memorable movies.

Real Genius (with Greg/Gary from White Lotus fame) is probably my favorite role of his. I watched that movie so many times.

Damn damn damn... RIP to a real one.

Damn RIP

Been a fan since I first saw him in Top Secret. Obviously I don't know about his personal life, but he never seemed to have a huge ego...just seemed to be a down to earth guy. Going to need to do a Val Kilmer film festival now
Kilmer was notoriously difficult to work with on sets*

So much so that one director (forget who) famously said, "I wouldn't cast Val Kilmer if I was filming the Val Kilmer Story"

*I've heard this multiple times but never heard it elaborated on was it:

Lead Actor Prima Donna? "I'm a mega star and demanded to be treated like one"

Screaming and rude to other cast and crew, just a generally arse?

Ed Norton style meddling? "I'm the actor but I'm also going to direct and edit the film too"?

Party animal who shows up drunk and/or high?

Don't really want to be that guy or speak "ill" of the dead

But reading articles and comments about Val Kilmer I'm reading things like Acting Icon, Legendary Actor, National Treasure

No offense meant but really?

He was a good actor who made good movies that I enjoyed and in my opinion had one legendary role (Doc Holliday)

But acting icon?

I said in the Gene Hackman thread that those terms were also assigned to him even though I had never heard him referred as such before

But Gene Hackman has exponentially more claim to those descriptions than Val Kilmer

As someone put a method actor who was a leading man. In other words he was a diva. Tried to upstage, irritate others, make himself be more important than anyone else.

If famous actors with multiple iconic roles aren't acting icons, who is?

To be frank, i would not call either Kilmer or Hackman an ‘icon’.. to me, the word icon is thrown around way too loosely these days.. I am iconic, you are iconic , the Ahole who lives down the street is iconic .. When Cruise or Travolta or Harrison Ford or Eastwood or Bruce Willis , when any of those guys pass away, we will have lost a true icon .

Also, my piping hot take, if we are comparing Kilmer’s career with Hackman’s, is that they are VERY even…. Obvs Hackman was around for longer, but in terms of depth and richness of roles, to me Kilmer can go toe to toe, with roles such as Holliday and Iceman and in Real Genius and, oh my god, it cant be overstated how HUGE his portrayal of Jim Morrison in Doors was at the time, at least to 16 yr old me who caravanned with a group of friends across the Causeway and all the way to Kenna to see it on opening night , b/c they were showing it with something brand new called Dolby Surround Sound .
