Mike Florio bringing the proper perspective to our organization: “Saints are a solid long-term destination for a new coach“ (1 Viewer)

Nonsense, Florio was talking like he hadn't even looked at the numbers and was basing everything off of prior years. The other guy had looked at them and recognized the problems with our aging players that have big cap numbers that can't be cut without making the cap worse. We actually gain a tiny bit of cap space cutting Carr, but we'd go around $10m deeper if we cut Jordan, Davis and Mathieu.

And on top of that, they never actually talked about the team getting any better, just getting compliant with the cap. So no, Florio isn't providing a reasonable take, he's talking like a typical national media guy who doesn't know the details.

EDIT: Seems I just watched the video. More after I read the article. Should be fun.

EDIT 2: Nope, nothing really to add. Gayle is a fine owner and certainly doesn't meddle, but like he said most don't. He gives some credit to Mickey on building good teams in the past that most believe belongs to Payton. And you can't have it both ways. If Payton left us with a bad cap in 2021 then he gets credit for the teams he built too. If it was Loomis that built the teams, then he's responsibly for the cap from day 1.
You are absolutely right in your assessment of Florio. I read his take and he added nothing to the equation. The saints have an aging roster and some promising talent but overall it is far from being developed. Loomis is basically 1/5 of picking a a decent coach and that was Payton. Correct me if I wrong Payton was recommended by Bill Parcells. With a 20% chance of picking a goo head coach I'll go with the 80% that says he'll pick the wrong the guy

How is Loomis 1/5 in hiring a HC? He's only hired 2, Payton and DA, and it will be 3 after this one. So, he's currently 1/2.

Florio's piece reads like a puffer. His premise is "Hey, if the Saints can find the right coach and QB, it's a good long-term job. Bad teams tend to stay bad, but let's not call the Saints those other bad teams yet."

He is also probably low on his 2025 dead cap guess of $50M.

Now go buy 64 copies of his book Father of Mine.

He IS incorrect on the amount of dead money the Saints will have this year. What is on the books before the league year even begins is $48,342,346 from Lattimore, Jameis and MT. When the league year hits it will go up to $65,906,346 with the expiring contracts of Chase Young, Juwan Johnson, and Tanoh.

And as far as our cap deficit goes, it has grown a couple of million dollars over the last few days. Katherine Terrell follows that stuff pretty close is a great follow on twitter.

Hey, really digging your specificity on the numbers on your cap posts. And your recent post where you posited taking Carr's dead cap impact now with him removed from the roster was instructive.

The cap itself is not that interesting to me. They have to be under the cap on league year day one and so it's the fallout I pay attention to.

2025 is going to be fat dead cap year. 2026 is unknown, as nothing can rollover yet if I understand it. I don't think 2026 will be pretty either but that's to your point of taking the Carr full dumper now, not spread out.

The fallout you talked about should always be fallout we desire. Like if a player is cut or traded, it shouldn't be to get under the cap. It should be because we want to improve on the position or cut bait on a prior bad decision. And those bad decisions happen to EVERY GM, Loomis included. What doesn't usually happen to other GMs is getting stuck with really bad contracts that they have no maneuverability to get out of and the only option is to double down on it. We've been doing that and we need to get back the flexibility to take a one year hit and be done with it.

The other thing we should be excited for annually is the possibility of adding free agents on normal contracts that'll help the team win. Carr's contract was immediately suspect. There was no real competition for him and he had been cut by his prior team. We signed him to the only contract we could which on it's surface seemed reasonable being back loaded with a big signing bonus and only $60 million guaranteed. It was a base salary of $1.5 million in 2023 and $30 million in 2024. But we knew we had no room for the $30 million in 2024. So year two came and we had to convert his salary to even more back loaded guaranteed money. If we don't cut him now, we'll do the same thing again next month and add yet another $30 million to the eventually dead money.

There are mechanisms to clean this up. But it doesn't coincide with the team being very good in the short term. The good news is we weren't going to be good anyway, so this should be the time to take our lumps and get things cleaned up for our next coach to have a fighting chance. We will know in short order whether Loomis is ready to do it. I hope he is.
