‘Crisis communications’: emails show how NFL’s Saints and NBA’s Pelicans helped New Orleans church spin abuse scandal (266 Viewers)

It wouldn’t be a Saints off-season unless there was some major off the field scandal going on in the background.

Surprised Vargas wrote this. For those that don’t know, there was a time where Vargas was essentially our Nick Underhill, our go-to source for credible, breaking Saints news.

Seems to be just new info about very old news, trying hard to get it resurfaced. Witch hunt type efforts IMO.

What’s the breaking news?

He had a major PR issue, didn’t want to hurt the Catholic Church, the biggest charity in the world. Anymore than he needed, he knew a close friend with a full time PR team, and reached out to see if they would be able to help?

And Gayle was like, absolutely. We also want to minimize damage to the church and its 99.999% extremely good parts.

And everyone in America hates church now so it’s somehow a scandal.

I’m not a Catholic Btw

Did I miss anything?

Again, it is neither a regurgitation nor a hit piece. New information in the form of leaked emails came to light. They are reporting that new information. They are not making anything up or mischaracterizing anything.
it is regurgitated. nothing new was learned. it is absolutely a hit piece probably with more power play behind the scenes than what you will ever realize.

It was never a story the first time.

Same thing with the Brett Favre funds.

As soon as you look at it critically at all, it just “sounds” like a story if you spin it.

They are all hit pieces. Reporters trying to make their names and get followers.

Really great that this resurfaces right as our potential future head coach is in New Orleans.
Yeah, it certainly doesn’t help imo. I’m pretty sure KM is focused on other things at the moment but who knows what his thought process will be after the SB.

And the HITS keep coming. 🤦🏾‍♂️ the optics of this is Extremely bad. Helping the church in any capacity dealing with child abuse in my opinion is horrendous. How does this affect Our head coaching search, and Landing Free Agents?

The people in this organization including Bensel, Gayle, and Laushcha who helped the Catholic church in their efforts to cover up the rape of young children are disgusting and anyone defending them because they're part of your sportsball team are equally so. Priests were RAPING CHILDREN and when the Archbishop came to the Saints to help mitigate the fallout, executives of the organization not only dutifully helped but they also worked to minimize the fallout to the church in the media and lied about their involvement when the news broke. Can you imagine the betrayal if this was one of your children? Can you imagine the weight of an entire city structure working against holding pedophiles accountable? How is any of this acceptable?

I grew up in New Orleans, attended the first playoff win against the Rams, and bled black and gold.

I'm disgusted by all of it. I only half-heartedly follow this team anymore after the whole NFL's everyone-is-a-racist garbage but this will finally end any lasting love I have for the franchise I grew up with and supported financially and emotionally. Good riddance.

Keep lying to yourself. Its absolutely a story.

I know people like to minimize or make the other side look ridiculous to support their side of an argument, but not everyone has opinions on matters just because it involves their favorite “sportsball team.”

Just because you feel one way about something doesn’t mean everyone else is like an immature 12 year old incapable of forming adult opinions on adult matters regardless of football team allegiance.

I would feel the same way about this story if it was Arthur Blank or Jerry Jones.

The Guardian article linked in the OP, muckraking as it it, is actually worth the read. Just to know what's being accused. The part in red is the new revelation:

"Yet what remained hidden until now are more than 300 emails, amounting to more than 700 pages, many emblazoned with the NFL and NBA logos, showing that the teams’ officials were more involved with some of the church’s operations than they ever admitted. They expose how extensively the sports teams’ leaders intervened in their local church’s most unyielding scandal.
"In the most blatant example of that, Bensel – the teams’ vice-president for communications – wrote an email to Lauscha on 1 November 2018, the day before the clergy-abuse list was released. Using common abbreviations for “conference call” and “with”, Bensel wrote: “Had a cc w [New Orleans’ then district attorney] Leon Cannizzaro last night that allowed us to take certain people off the list.

I think what's frustrating is this.

Yes, it's true that the Saints shouldn't have engaged in this, someone has to be reprimanded.
However, people like myself or others who appear to be dismissive of the situation aren't dismissive of what happened, we (and maybe I'm only speaking for self) realize that some of the sheen is taken off of this because it's obvious someone else pulled this back up and is essentially using the pain of the people above to attack the organization.

So it's hard to bypass how fked up THAT portion of this current scenario is....along w/ how fked up the initiall issue is.

Two wrongs don't make a right and whomever is responsible for this being leaked yet again is not only hurting the organization but the people who have to relive it again

The organization hurt itself when it chose to do this.
