Breaking! Official 2024 Saints UDFA Class: currently 16 Signings & 19 R-Minicamp Invites (1 Viewer)

That can be a misleading stat. A lot of that is dependent on where he is punting from. Part of that is due to the failure of the offense to get into scoring position. Many punters could place the ball at the 21 if they are punting from say the 50.

If you take out the 4 players with just a few punts, he is 33rd in average (in a 32 team league) and 27th in net average. Watching the games, it was obvious that he is just not a good punter. We need an upgrade there.
Average opponent yard line averages the LOS yard line of where every punt finishes after each punt, returns included. It’s an average of where the opponents begin their drives after punts. All punts accounted. It’s a more blatant stat showing the punt’s effectiveness in field position on a regular basis.

Net yard average is misleading because it’s just discussing least-most yards. It never provides context about what yard line/LOS the punter punted from, whether or not it’s a short field for intended punt outcome, and what the punt’s field results are in opponent yard line. It’s a proportion between punt yards & return yards and nothing in field position. If the punts are 43-46 yarders for no return mostly at the opp’s 1-20 yard line, that isn’t known in net yards. Only thing discussed in net yards is the amount of yards on each punt attempt. Yard avg rankings without field position/LOS stats makes yard avg a really casual stat category at surface level. It doesn’t seem like Hedley is primarily evaluated by yards avg while his punts are effective in field position.
