5th year option deadline for Olave/Penning is May 1st

Flourish is tough. I think a lot of us are forgetting he still lead the entire league in OT pressures given up.

And he did that while getting plenty of help from TEs and RBs. I'm also not sure if Penning will continue the progress he has made under a new OL Coach. Dennison and Benton helped him to develop a lot as a run blocker and made him at least playable as a pass blocker, but I'm not sure if Nugent can do the same things with him. So, I think there is some risk he doesn't get better or even regresses.

I think you're closer to right on the quality of this year's draft at WR, I haven't looked all that closely. But I also think the factors of draftees on tap, the nearness of Olave's rookie deal ending and his cost skyrocketing as a result, plus concussions means that he's not so valuable as people may like to wish/imagine.

Yep, definitely things they will have to consider. And in any other year, I'd probably agree with you. This year, though, with the draft being less than stellar at the position, I can see it happening at some point, but you're right, probably not at the compensation people would like to see. If they're hoping for a Cooks type compensation, oddly enough, when the Saints netted a 1st round pick from New England, I dont see that happening. I think it's solidly in the realm of possibility that it even happens after the first round if the Saints come away with a pass catcher at #9.

Try to re-sign BOTH homegrown drafted talents to fair value deals, which should not break the bank for either player. Muckey is the best at doing contracts with contingencies. Do not trade Olave, do not let Penning walk, and hopefully Mickey and Khai can get those done prior to the 5th yr option deadline.

Olave at $12M/yr 4yrs
Penning $9M/yr 5yrs

Olave, it’s been great but with concussions time for someone else to take the risk. Which means Loomis will make home top 5 highest paid WR all guaranteed. But Penning Id keep. He’s rounding into form and we need to see where this goes

I agree with the thought process here.

I am afraid Olave is going to think he's worth a LOT more than the Saints (should be) willing to pay him.

I highly doubt he'd sign an extension for $3M AAV

Something to consider. I don't know what family would go on social media blaming the QB if the brother who's a WR talked positive of that QB.
You've never met my family. Not all families are like our families. I'm glad that it seems your family is not like mine and others I've known. Not everyone is as fortunate.

I would decline to offer both. If they have breakout years and want to leave in free agency for rich contracts that we don't want to match, take the compensatory picks. If they have relatively mediocre seasons, we have the leverage in negotiating new contracts.
The team and the depth don't get better doing it that way.

You take the 5th year on Olave if you don’t trade him before the deadline…this gives you at least an additional offseason to trade him

This probably what will happen IMO....I don't really think Olave has much trade value at this point....
